Fixed blade for duty carry.

My current go to is an esee-3mil but I would like to get something a little more defense oriented

It might sound stupid, but just to keep the basics in mind, what do you envision a more "defense oriented" knife will do to defend you that an ESEE 3 wouldn't do?

If you just want a BAMF tactical knife, then by all means go for it. But is it because it's a cool "tactical" knife, or is it because you actually foresee a "defense oriented" blade actually functioning differently somehow in a real world scenario.

I think that it would be extremely difficult to find a fixed blade that would excel at being both a utility tool and weapon. I don't know jack about using knives in a weaponized role, so take my opinion for what it's worth...

I'd check out a Benchmade 176 SOCP as a weapon retention and defensive tool, or maybe the 178 (partial serration) for a little more utility factor. The SOCP is a slim, light package (under 3.5oz with sheath) with versatile/discreet carry options. Benchmade released some YouTube vids with the designer Greg Thompson demonstrating the knife and its benefits.

Maybe the SOCP would make a good weapon but it's a pretty lousy design for an actual cutting tool, imo. If you want a blade for utility use, I'd add a waved Spyderco Endura folder.

But if you have your heart set on a compromise between utility and self-defense in a fixed blade, maybe check out TOPS Knives. If you can get past the ridiculous mall-ninja names they give their knives, you may find TOPS can make a decent quality product and offer several different models/shapes/sizes.

Anyway, good luck in your search and stay safe out there! :)

If they made the esee 3 without a choil and with a bigger handle I would be pretty satisfied. I am looking into several options including Winkler knives and other custom makers. I will make sure to let everyone know what I decide on and how I choose to carry it.

I'd suggest something about the size of an opened Emerson CQC7b... like this!

Check out the new Winkler Blue Ridge hunter That's my duty carry fixed blade-Its a slightly smaller belt knife

good choice, winkler stands behind his product 100% Ive owned 4 of his knives. tad belt knife is my favorite.
Probably going to pick up the winkler. That Blue Ridge is perfect.

I love my Winkler belt knife- didn't know much about this smaller version, but it looks good.

From personal experience I have a Benchmade push dagger behind my magazine pouch. Rides secure and out of sight, easily accessible with either hand and no need to change your grip if your using it for "last ditch weapon retention". Carry a folder elsewhere for everyday/utilitarian tasks.

Those Bud Nealy knives look pretty good...lots of options

Hey CM your grinds on that last one look real nice

Thanks, this is the final product.

A Fallkniven PRK would fit the bill as well. There should be a.few.left around.
