fixed blade for freaky hands

Hi guys!

Maybe you could help me?
I´m thinking about getting a medium sized fixed blade for concealed carry. First and foremost for self defense purposes.

I already own a BM Nimravus, a Spyderco Fred Perrin and an Al Mar Sere Operator, but I don´t feel 100% comfortable with these.

Problem is, that I have really funny hands. Short, but very, very broad with fingers that do all look like thumbs and calluses (expression?) all over them.

I don´t like the cut-out in the FB´s handle, furthermore it´s too short. The Nim´s handle feels too thin, and the Sere´s handle too slippery.

What I am looking for is a knive especially for thrusting. Needs to be very concealable (iwb or sob) and with a good, solid-feeling, non-slippery grip.

Is there any knive that you know, which might fit my needs? I don´t want to go for customs if possible (bit short of money  )

Any suggestions, please?

Thank you :)

Garth

What feels good in the hand is so subjective I think it would be very hard for someone to give you good advice. My only advice is to go to as many knife shops and knife shows as possible. Custom may be the way to go if you can't find anything that works for you. Some makers are very good at looking at someone's hand and figuring out what the best handle would be. If price is an issue, then customizing an existing knife may be possible.

FWIW carrying concealed if you don't have a permit will get you in loads of trouble. Know your local laws.

Try a Buck mini knighthawk - if you like it, have a custom sheath made for your specific needs.

If want to spend some money, check out a Busse Combat PT-5 or Force One.

They are specifically desgined for thrusting and with a good rig you could conceal them. They have good sized handles so gripping would not be a problem.

Try posting a thread in the Busse Combat forum and you will get some answers. I have one Busse and it is an incredible knife.

Thanks for the input :)

Do you think I should try and put a checkering on the Sere´s handle? I do have a checkering file, but i´m not so skilled at filing.

Ordinarily I wouldn't recommend Kraton handles -- nothing wrong with them, I just prefer harder grips -- but in your case, they might help. Cold Steel has many fixed blades, different sizes, different shaped grips, generally Kraton to prevent slipping. Prices are usually better from dealers than from CS themselves.

CRKT has possibilities also. The Ultima was specifically designed for a good grip, but it's one of their more expensive knives, and pretty big. They also do the ultimate in thrusting knives, the Hissatsu, also a bit pricey, but I've read some really complimentary reviews by owners. Take a look.

The Hissatsu blade looks perfekt to me. That´s a great knive for thrusting.

But I´m not quite sure about the handle. There is no guard. Isn´t this pretty dangerous for the fingers, when the handle gets wet?

See the round butt? The Hissatsu handle is designed for palming: the butt fits into the heel of your hand when thrusting. The handle itself is made of a hard plastic molded over the tang with Kraton molded to the plastic: durable but grippy. As you can see, it has a simulated rayskin pattern, which may help the grip a bit, too. In reverse grip, you would hold your thumb over the butt, for the same effect.

"palming"? "the heel of my hand"? I´m sorry, I dont fully understand this. My english isn´t that good... :(

I suggest looking at a Bob Dozier with one of his unique tactical kydex sheaths. Just the sheaths Bob offers alone make even a skinning knife a tactical weapon ready to be whipped out in a second. He offers both horizontal and vertical but get one of the horizontal belt sheaths. They are awesome.

SOG's Pentagon.

Dagger style, good to conceal, handle made of rubber like checkered material.

Hey Garth...

How about a push dagger ??

Shoot me your address, I've got a custom rig laying around here for your Al Mar,, you are more than welcome to it..
I made a bunch and they never sold,, so they are give Aways

Eric....

If you want a knife for thrust, my recommendation would be to get something that has a forward angle. Sorry, I can't do better that. Perhaps a Bud Nealy Amoeba? What blade length are you looking for anyway? A CS despardo might be a good choice for you.

Try a Becker neck knife and wrap the handle with paracod. It's inexpensive, but a decent concealable blade.

That's a good suggestion, as the Buck Nighthawks have an excellent, ergonomic handle, and are very inexpensive.

My hands are large and wide, with short, stubby fingers. The FB that really fits my hands well is the Spyderco Temperance FB

That's a really good idea, not that there are many of them out there. Didn't CRKT do a Greg Lightfoot with a kind of pistol grip, or was that a folder? My Spyderco Massad Ayoob is a folder with the blade canted down from the handle. I just can't think of a good fixed blade in that pattern. Of course the Desperado will scare the heck out of most people ...

thank you very much for your help, folks. Especially Eric :) .

I knew this is the right place to ask.

I´ll have a closer look at the Hissatsu an the Cold Steel knives.

I also found a knive maker in my region, who will modify the handle of my Sere Operator.
And with the custom rig, Eric promised to send to me, I´m perfectly outfitted. (sounds a little strange, but I guess you know what I´m trying to express).

Thank you all! :)
