My son is ready for a small fixed blade. He had a Vic Camper that he has used safely(under my supervision) for almost a year now. He has not cut himself as of yet. I only let him open and close the main blade for the first few weeks. Anyhow..

I can't seem to find a inexpensive (20 bux)fixed balde with a 3 inch handle and about a 3 inch blade.

Any idea's ???

An inch bigger than what you're after and $24.57

My 8 year old daughter uses this when we are out wandering the woods or catfishing.

Buck Diamondback

We bought it at Dick's Sporting Goods for ~$18.

Honestly, it's also my favorite outdoors knife. :)

How about a Becker Necker? It is in the low 30's and a great little blade. The handle is skeletonized and can be wrapped with paracord for some added comfort. They cut great and are very handy little knives.

The $20 mark is going to be difficult to hit with a decent knife. The becker is a very nice knife with a pretty big following for just a little more.

I don't think I makes much difference on the length, but a handle that is comfortable makes sense. It has always made me crazy that stuff designed for kids is crap-- like many cheap musical instruments. No wonder a kid won't practice on a guitar that I wouldn't play myself. In other words, buy a knife that you wouldn't mind using yourself.

That aside, the mora Scout is made just for that and has a slimmer handle and double a guard that doesn't look like training wheels. Here's a YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQbu...ra-scout-review-and-paper-cut-test/2295389401

I worry more about what a kid might do to another with a knife rather than themselves and that is where the training and parenting comes in-- lessons on the responsibility of deadly force, just like a firearm. For that matter, they could do more damage to their fingers with a non-locking folder than a fixed blade.

I would be shy on the Becker Necker in that is difficult to get out of the sheath-- it can take a fair tug and takes some care to control.

The AG Russell Woodswalker comes to mind. http://www.agrussell.com/product.asp?pn=AGPRS&bhcd2=1235839710

Thanks for the idea's. The buck I had not thought of.

He's a pretty responsible kid and we do have a hard and fast rule to STOP using the knife in any way if there is another person within his arms length. I think the scouts call it a blood circle.

A mora is the best starter knife you can get.

Ragweed Forge

Ragnar is great guy to do business with.

That is a nice Buck, though.:)

Timberline makes a 3" neck knife, as well.

I'd get the Buck or a #860 Mora.

I love my Mora!:D

The SOG Field Pup is also a good starter knife, although an inch longer than what you specified. I like mine.

Cabela's

If you think the Mora is just a cheap kiddie's knife, try it. Your mind will be changed....

Cold Steel Mini Pendleton with it's 3" blade and 3" handle in AUS-8 is perfect for that.I have one if anyone needs it , as I don't know any little kids !
