I have my EDC folder, and I was thinking instead of beating the crap out of it I should also get a fixed blade with a sheath to keep in he truck at work. I am an Arborist, and am mostly cutting dirty used ropes, but we are in the field so I can run into anything out there. I would like something that is VERY durable as it WILL get abused by me and my guys, is easy to sharpen and HOLDS its edge well, Maybe a sheepsfoot or Tanto style tip....not THAT important though.
I would like to stay in the $50 range but will spend up to $100 for a good knife that will last me a while.

ok you have, in my opinion, two options here. both are kick ass knives and both will serve you well for the rest of your life. first is teh fallkniven f-1. it is a swedish vg-10 laminated steele knife. costs about 80 buckeroos depending on where you get it. and then there is the brand of Ranger knives. pricing from 60 for the shiv up to whatever you want to pay justin for a custom made knife. but the rd-6 is only $80 also and that i think is your best option. just my opinion though. good luck my man.

I would suggest that you take a look at Rnager Knives,as well as Bark River Knives.

I think these are great suggestions!

Fallkniven F1 - comes with a leather or Zytel sheath, one of which might work better for you than the other
Ranger RD6 - available at www.rangerknives.com

Also: Ontario RAT7 (in 1095 steel) - comes plain edge or part serrated with very aggressive serrations; you might find them useful at times.
I know I do.

Leu Cuctom will make you a cutter out of A-2 for less than $150. and that knife will cut for a long time!

A Buck 119 from Wally World for $34 is hard to beat - except for the slightly smaller Buck Vanguard 192 for ~$60 - or $90 from Cabelas as their 'Alaskan Guide' S30V steel version. My new Benchmade #201 'Activator+' , at $83 delivered is a great performer - in D2 steel. The Benchmade is in the middle below, the regular Buck Vanguard - in 420HC steel - is on the right. The left hand knife is my new Bark River Huntsman, but it was $118, so I didn't 'push' it!

I've been asking myself this same question. One of my ideas was to buy a Fallkniven F1 blade blank (blade and tang, but no handle slabs) and cord-wrap or make my own slabs.

Ranger knives are strong but big. The Fallknivens are slimmer. Other options for well under $50 would be the Cold Steel GI Tanto (around $30) or one of the Mora knives. Those will last long and work hard, although they are less refined and/or neat looking than some other options.

You can buy the SOG Seal 2000 or the Seal Pup for about 100 and 75 respectively. Both good choices. I have not heard a bad idea on this thread.

Get you half a dozen Moras in different models and figure out which one you like and and buy some more of that one. Cant beat them for a hard use, good blade for the money, working fixed blade.--KV

Here is the only picture I have easy access to with a Buck 119 "Special". It is the fourth from the left, the first three being John Greco and Fred Vollmer customs that run ~$125. The fifth is a Marbles US-made SafeGrip (rubber handled) Plainsman. Current stock is from 'off-shore', so I don't reccomend them. 'Knivesshipfree.com' has some older US-made stock ~$40, however.

The 119 has a 420HC Bos heat-treated blade, a pretty good performer that is delivered sharp - with a Kydex sheath - at Wally World for ~$34 - pretty hard to beat for a value. If you watch the latter Les Stroud 'Survivorman' episodes on the Discovery Channel, that's the knife he carries and uses. The one in that picture is actually my favorite kitchen knife!

Not sure what size you are looking for, but Entrek Knives makes a few models under the $100 mark. The JAG model is a rounded tanto knife with a full tang and a 4.75" X .187" blade for good strength. All Entreks are made from 440C but this is not the 440C you see in the S&W, or the CCC's, as this is 440C that has been worked for the maximum it can give the user. I have a 4.0" Cobra that is simply handy as it can be! Try www.discountsupplyunlimited.com for pictures and specs of these knives. Great place to purchase from also.:D

Either you get the F1 and get the company logo or the workers names engraved on them. The knife will last a lifetime and they will be careful with it.

Or you can buy a bucket or two of Hultafors GK www.hultafors.se (click on the yellow knife to the right) or Mora whatever (or clones). They are extremely good for the price and still so cheap that you dont have to cry if you drop one down in the pavement.
Swedish carpenters and farm people have used them for ages.

If you have someone visiting Sweden just tell them to go into nearest hardware store (usually called Järnia, JULA, Clas Ohlson, Bauhaus etc) and buy a box full. They cost about 20 SEK (3 bucks) each and over here everyone has at least five more or less dull ones lying around.

Hey guys, he is looking for a "workers knife", not something you will be scared to use :)
