Recommendation? Fixed blade for work?

RMJ recently came out with a small fixed blade in Nitro V. From the limited amount I've read about the steel it's supposed to have great corrosion resistance. Can't remember the model name at the moment but it comes in plain-edge and partially-serrated.

Spyderco is also coming out with a fixed blade in LC200N this year I believe. It was developed with a guy (surfingringo on here) that is in his kayak sea fishing damn near every day.

I've been eyeing this very knife. There was a very detailed review on this site not too long ago. The knife is called the Utsidihi.

I will echo what several others have already posted. A Bradford Guardian fixed blade.
You can buy a Guardian 4 in super-steel stainless (my gushing) full-flat grind M390 WITH DLC coating and that sucker will hold an edge and will be very unlikely to rust. The Diamond-like-coating is famous in the knife industry and protects a blade exceptionally well.
In addition, the Bohler M390 is a truly wonderful stainless blade steel which holds a great edge.
You can get this from Bradford Knives, in full-flat grind, DLC coating on M390, for about $240. It comes with a leather sheath or you can get an optional kydex sheath (water?) for $40.
I've had about eight of Guardian 3's in M390 with DLC, M390, CPM-3V and Vanadis 4E tool steel. I've sold some; given some to my boys, etc. Great knives, and the 3" comes in a cross-draw sheath which is great for quick access. I've carried a 3" (cross-draw leather) every day for the last year since I got it...I also carry a clipped folder in my rh every day also, but seldom use it any more.

While I agree the guardians are great blades, I didn’t like my guardian 4 in a hard use role so I traded it. I have several folders in m390, 204p, and have used some 20cv blades too which are all pretty much the same steel. And I’m well aware of DLC, my second “high end” folder was a PM2 that’s dlc. About half my knives are DLC, including my XM18 that I carry everyday. It’s flat dark earth DLC on the Hinderer though.

With the chance of dropping it in the water my first choice would also be a Mora. For the price you can always have a spare. If you want a 6" stainless blade and synthetic sheath a Fallkniven A1 fits the bill. You can get it with or without a black coating.

How important is corrosion resistance to you? Does the knife have to be 100% passive? (Won’t rust ever)

Really like those RMJ blades, might have to get one of those regardless of what end up on the ocean with me!
Thank you!

No not 100%
I do clean and maintain them as often as I should in the conditions they get used in, wether it’s 100% or not. My Salt 2 is DLC coated and I hardly use it and it still gets cleaned and oiled. The habit of tool maintenance is something I’m pretty disciplined about regardless of the materials the tool is made from...

If I go on water I attatch my expensive knife to me with a disposable ball chain. Like a lanyard to my belt. That way I won’t drop it in the water, but at the same time I can easily break it off if I have to.

Maybe get something in the affordable price range to get by, and save your quarters for one of the nicer options recommended in this thread.:p

Recs based on what I have:

Cheap starters: Buck Bucklite Max (679), I slightly prefer this over a Mora and can find these under $25. Or a stainless Mora.

Next step up: Bradford Guardian 4 3D in M390. The one Lapedog Lapedog recommended looks really interesting too.

Hey all, finally got around to ordering a knife. My Mora Kansbol will be here hopefully next week sometime. I picked that one, simply because I liked the looks of the blade lol. I will probabaly end up with a bushcraft black, and hopefully I’ll be able to upgrade to a Boye sooner or later.
In the meantime, I found that if I clipped the folder I’d been using to my raingear instead of my pocket it gets used more often. I also brought a SOG seal pup, because, well why not? Lol

Been too busy to take many knife related pictures, we’ve brought in over 106 thousand pounds of dungeoness crab in the last 3 weeks or so.
But here’s a couple non knife pictures from the ocean for your viewing pleasure :)

That’s me on the left in the last one. Myself and the other guy in the last picture are both blockmen. We switch off so as to avoid burning ourselves out.
If you’ve got any questions about anything, just ask.
I’ll try to get some pictures using the Mora when it gets here too.

Great images. But good god do crabs freak me out :eek::D
Lol I think if they were a land creature they’d freak me out too. Like if we had crabs instead of spiders on the wall above us as we woke up in the morning every so often

Sounds like you already got a lot of good suggestions, but I thought I'd mention one more that I don't think has come up yet.

It's not out yet afaik, but Spyderco will be releasing a new fixed blade designed by a fisherman/water sportsman based in Costa Rica, @Surfingringo here on the forum, called the Waterway:

The steel is LC200N, which should be nearly as "rustproof" as H1, but with edge holding more on par with s30v as I understand it.

S35VN has proven to be excellent in and around salt water for me. Personally I wouldn’t hesitate to take any knife with this steel for a swim.

Nice choice on that Mora Kansbol. I've never owned that model but it looks one hell of a deck hands knife.

Well the Mora has landed!
This is my first one and it definitely won’t be the last. Haven’t had a chance to see how well it will work for me taped to the left shoulder strap of my raingear (which is my preferred fixed blade carry position at sea). There is a somewhat disposable victorinox serrated paring Knife there now. I will take a picture of it before I cut it off and replace it with the Kasbol.
As I said before I started clipping my folder to my bibs as well I’ll include that too. I still dislike H1 with a passion. But it’s come in handy when my fixed blade gets dull and I don’t have time to sharpen it. inkynate inkynate i plan on getting one of those waterways when they come out thank you for bringing that to my attention.
I plan to track down a new folder since it’s been a great back up tool. I will post another thread for a folder recommendation with a link to this one so anyone that cares can read through our process here.
All that being said, I was considering doing a giveaway (my first) for the SOG SEAL Pup and my Spyderco Salt 2 as long as I get a new folder I like better than the Salt.
This SOG was brand new when it was brought to the boat on January 15th.

Powder coat isn’t the best for a hard use knife lol
