Here's the thing, I grew up outdoors, when I was a teenager my parents didn't care if we used slipjoints, locking knives, sheath knives, machetes, axes, hatches, saws home made spears... the only thing we weren't allowed to use was the Stihl, sawing is dangerous business even if its your job.
A well thought out multi-tool is a very nice companion to a large high quality folder or fixed blade that's well sharpened.
What I recommend, since these kids are BSA or in a similar organization is that you send home your options for knives for them, now a ka-bar is a good woods knife so are many others, having the parents be aware of the options you make available should help alleviate any concerns they have, they will know you are actively monitoring their kids.
I don't have much else to say, there were many very good recommendations, I'd recommend handguards if the kids aren't really used to knife use.
