Fixed Blade Hunting Knife <$75

Here's more confusion, D.H. Russell Original Canadian Belt Knife from Grohmann or getting up around $100 the Knives of Alaska Cub and Muskrat combo.

How about the Buck Vanguard? I've got the Cabela's Alaskan Guide version with s30v steel.

I was just about to suggest the same thing. I have an older Bass Pro version in ATS-34. Great knife.

The knife pictures above is more like $100, but it's worth saving up the extra $25 for the better steel.

On a site-note.
What steel is used in the Case Rosewood Hunter?
It seems priced a bit high compared to the competition.

I've used the spyderco Moran quite a lot for cleaning rabbits.
It's indeed very good.
The hybrid hunter would be about 30$ less
The big belly and very high hollow grind make it a very good hunting/skinning knife.
It's also very light and very secure in the hand.

Go with the Buck 119, 42 dollars at walmart and that way you have a nice quality knife with money left over.

Of course it might be worth saving up $125 or so and buying a Dozier.

Another vote for Buck vanguard. It would also serve you well to check out the Exchange in the knifemakers area. I've seen some really good deals there lately on hunters.

I would echo the Buck 119 or the Buck AG Vanguard model. These two are classics that have stood the test of time.

Two other ones that would do the job are the Coldsteel master hunter or the Benchmade rant DP.

Personally I would take a good quality stainless steel over carbon steels .

In that price range, I would agree with the recomendation for the Buck 192 Vanguard (420HC) or the shorter Buck Gen-5.

I have one of each and they are both great deer skinning knifes!

Also, The Knives of Alaska Alpha Wolf is flat out awesome. And their customer service is absolutely second to nobody.

Surprised no one has thrown the Benchmade Rant into the discussion...Less than $50, and IMHO, better bang for your buck than the Buck 119.

Here's a pic with the Vanguard in it to give an idea of size. It's sandwiched between two Cold Steels, a Master Hunter and a large Pendleton Hunter. Funny, but those are two of the only three CS knives I own. I also have a Cold Steel stockman (made by Camillus).

Is that the buck diamondback 3.25" blade?
If so, hell, get that on ebay for $25 on ebay - including shipping.

thanks for all the great suggestions, but I think right now I am leaning heavily towards the rat izula, its simple and fits my style, and I prefer its smaller size.

It was mentioned three posts earlier :)

The rant is a good all purpose knife but for a hunting knife there are imho better options.
Is the 119 good at skinning?
