The thread about the under $100 hunting knife made me think, there are a lot of choices of good knives for under $100, but what about the more pedestrian $40 price limit? This is about the price for a tank of gas today and for a lot of casual hunters and giving gifts in families that are working poor the $40 limit is more practical. I have seen models from Kershaw, Ka-Bar and Blackjack all offered in this price range but my favorite is the Marttiini knibes made in Finland for the best bang for the low bucks.
Anyone wish to comment on knives in this price range?

No problem. Besides the wonderful Mora knives, which I'd suggest, you'd still definitely have some options, none of them "bad", in my opinion:

Buck Omni
Buck Diamondback
Buck Special
Boker BO519HH
Boker BOBA530H
CRKT Killbuck CR2810
CRKT CR2820
Outdoor Edge Hybrid Hunter OE-HH20N
Xicar Hunting Knife XI-799WAL

Just to name a few.:)

I bought a Buck 119BR, the brass pommel & guard/rosewood handle version of the Buck 'Special'. It's too pretty to use. Last September, I bought the plain Jane version 119 - for $37. Not a hunter, I thought it might be a good woods-walker companion - after all, Les Stroud, aka 'Survivorman' (Discovery & Science channels.), even carried one. It never got the chance... I used it to trim a roast - then cut steak into small cubes for chilli. Probably a great hunter, too... but it's my best kitchen knife!

my uncle had one of these, while we were skining our deer he started choping some bone
it chipped out bad, about a 3/4 of an inch long segment chipped out about a 1/2 an inch deep:thumbdn:
do not get one
the knife shouldnt have failed like that
the job was easly done by my scrapyard hooker :D

Buck omni= $37.00

How much does a scrap yard "Hooker" cost?? ;)

Thats like comparing a Chevy to a Mercedes...

If looking for traditional, I can recommend KA-BAR. I have one of there small blades, Little Fin, that I use as a bird and fish knife. It is good knife and paired with a Buck Big Sky as my main hunting blades. If I didn't have the Big Sky, I'd have no second thought about buying a larger KA-BAR either the Hunter or Hunter/Skinner. Though I have the means to buy the high dollar knives, they just don't seem worth it to me.

Also, for around $10 you can get a Mora Clipper, these are great knives and their plastic sheaths work well though not "pretty". Go to Ragweed Forge and look at the Mora's they have some nicer ones with wood and leather sheaths that are more traditional. If you get a plain red wooden handled knife, be warned the sheaths are junk.

$120, I geuss your right
but still a knife made for skinning should not have chiped that bad on bone
I mean a huge part of the blade was missing:thumbdn:
probly a bad heat reat but that rases questions about buck quality

a knife made for skinning.......... chipped while chopping bone

Yes comparing a knife 3 times as expensive isnt fair ;)

As for this quote here... well....

Bucks blades are made for cutting. Another gentleman posted in the buck thread awhile back about a Diamondback ($12.00 taiwan import) that he smashed to bits battoning through an elks pelvis... These knives are not designed for these things...
An Omni will last a lifetime if it is used as it was intended. If you want it to be an indesrtuctible knife you had better plan on shelling out alot more than $37.00... Sheesh! ;)
Buy him a bone saw or a Busse company knife ;)
I really cant believe the people out there that expect miracles out of thinly ground skinning knives etc. Buck uses a full hollow grind, its not meant for chopping through bone etc...

As for this thread I would go with an omni or a 119 for $40.00 or less. They are hard to beat (IMHO)
The new Kalinga is very hard to beat also!

Also don't forget about Bucks lifetime warranty, I would send it in, tell them what he did and see what they say about it.

Buck 119 Special
Buck Woodsman
Buck Pathfinder
AG Russell Bird and Trout
Mora knives, under $30 with wood handle, full-length tang, and leather sheath.

And I would be willing to give these a try, considering the price and materials, $30 at AG Russell's:
