I always suggest it, but dangit, it's always a good bargain :D:D:D:D

the Ontario carbon field knife, 4$ at knifecenter. If your in king city California, theres a gas station that sells them for around 5$. I bought 6 of them while I was there. the guy behind the counter looked at me funny and asked me if I worked in the fields, to which I had to tell him that they were just high quality knives for a great price... it looked very weird from his end I'm sure :)

if you know how to heat treat 1095, you can always hit it with a torch to make it harder at the edge.

Okay, now the absurd... wanna super sharp paring-style plastic handled serrated edge knife? How about the ALFI #ASB-12 - a dozen on a blister pack for $18.89 + s/h (alfi.com)? Buy six dozen, get one dozen free! Wanna see one 'in action'? Go to 'Subway' for lunch... yep, that's the colorful slicer they use.

having worked at subway, those knives are only good for cutting soft bread. and after 12 hours of use, they stop being good at that.

Here is the Buck 119 - less than $40 at Academy Sports and Wally World. The Benchmade Activator + (#201) was $82 with s/h, the Bark River 'Gameskeeper' runs ~$155 now - ignore the last two. The 119 is a deal for a great knife. The one in the picture chopped some wood before going to my kitchen, where it has diced a raw roast for chile, and trimmed chicken and other beef cuts. The 420HC SS is a lot tougher than the 440 series I have experienced - I still haven't honed/stropped it - and it can still shave forearm hair. The Wally World blister pack/box both had the nylon/Kydex sheath, while the Academy one, for a few bucks more, but still <$40 with s/t, has leather.

As I too like the Buck knives, I am a huge fan of the Mora knives found at ragweedforge.com.

The quality of steel both 12c27 stainless and the 1095 high carbon is excellent and well heat treated. The handles are shaped for hard work. They ain't pretty, but they are made for serious work.

Most of the sheaths are cheap and worthless, but easy to make one yourself--especially leather around the original as a liner.

Do I need to mention the cost?--$12.00 bucks will get you an outdoors knife you will fall in love with.

I just picked up a cold steel roach belly for about 12 bucks.
The handle is surprisingly comfortable in a large variety of grip. It was pretty sharp out of the box, even though the grinds are totally uneven. Has a sharp tip, and a nice belly. If you dont like it, you can just throw it away or keep as a parring knife in the kitchen.
