Fixed blade hunting knife

I love my Dozier ProGuide for hunting tasks and feel it has one of the best handles out there.

hoodoo i differ on my opion of henckels, once these were tops now their thumbs down in my book. i make chef & kitchen knives and this has lead to doing sharpening on lots of culinary knives the best imo are global, if you like the tradition style go with wustoff trident series, henckel are soft and over priced.

Hoodoo,

I am impressed, you read between the lines very well. I go backpack hunting every year in the trinity alps. We hike about 12 miles off trail and hunt deer in the upper passes. We cut the antlers off and all the meat and carry the meat out, along with our gear. Therfore, we do most of the butchering in the field. This is why I am looking for two knives for skining and boning out the meat. I am a knife user and am just learning about all the different types of knives and steel that are avalable. I really appreciate everybodies input, I have learned alot in the few days that I have been envolved in this forum.

From what I have learned so far, I am leaning toward Bob Dozer's knives. Everybody seems to think he treats his D2 steel properly and has a great product for the price. Does anybody know of a better value for the price than a Bob Dozer knife.

Rhino,

I really have no experience with henckels, and base my comments on what others have said. Thanks for the tip on Global. I will check them out. For the kitchen, over the years I've been very happy with Chicago Cutlery and Old Hickory. I have an old carbon steel Chicago Cutlery butcher knife that is unbelievable. I keep a steel around for keeping my kitchen knives sharp so I'm not too concerned about how long they hold an edge. I've never owned "high end" cutlery but if they cut better than my old Chicago Cutlery butcher, that would be something to have.

I don't know if they are still available, but I've used a Randall Mod. 5(?) since 1960. Works great for all skinning & dressing chores.

Mike, I love my Busse knives but I sure wouldn't recommend them as hunting knives unless you are planning on hitting a deer over the head with one.

I have a Lean Mean Street on order and I'm anticipating that this will approach hunting knife capability.

backpacker,
You can't go wrong with a Dozier, at least, based on what I've read from hunters that have posted here. I don't own one but I will someday.

Base on the posts I've read here, I think Jerry Hossum has an incredible understanding of knife blade application. He's a hunter himself and if you want a maker who really understands blade function, he'd be a good one.

JW, that is a beautiful pair!

They also brought to mind the Knives of Alaska sets...anyone have any experience with them?

Try Ruana Knife Works. They have several models to choose from. Prices are reasonable. Give them a call at 406-258-5368.
I was turned onto these knives by a friend. When he told me he got rid of all his Randall Knives in favor of Ruana's Knives that said alot. This guy uses his knives.

Cannot go wrong with a Dozier.Been using one for a while now.Good steel and good service, from a true gentleman.

have a"knife"day

For $200, I would def go with the BUSSE. The only question is...what size!

I have a 7" Tanto knife, and even though the blade is totally different, it was never too much knife, or too little. I would go with the 7".
