fixed blade knife

So I really don't have any fixed blade knives that I'm happy with for hiking/camping/bushcraft uses. I've got a Kabar (my current outdoors knife), a CRKT First Strike and a small bird and trout knife by Rapid River knife works. I'm looking for something with about 3-4 inches of blade and a comfortable four finger handle. I'm open to steel choices and handle material, I like leather sheaths that have the firesteel loop but also like kydex. I'm thinking I will have a little cash after the holidays, and this is something that I want to purchase. I would like to keep the price around a hundred bucks, could go up to 150ish for custom work. I'm already planning on buying a couple of moras, so please exclude those in your recommendations. I've been looking at JK knives, as well as Landi. Wondering what sort of recommendations you guys had. Thanks.

I'd look at the Rat Cutlery RC-3 or 4 both are great knives but you can't go wrong a JK

Good hunting

I like Dan Koster's work. He can do fancy, but even his no-nonsense using knives look good. Buy him in CPM3V and the knife won't break . . . ever. You can find his work and links to his web sight right here on BF.

Well you just so happen to choose a category of knife where there are many, many, many great candidates.

Customs: JK, Bryan Breeden, Koyote, Fiddleback, David Farmer, Gossman, Koster, NWA, ML-knives

Production: RC-4, Fallkniven F1, Bark River (Fox River, EDC Seax, Northstar, CDN special several others), Kellam Pukko or Fang, Enzo, Marbles, Blackjack

The Fallkniven F1 fits your budget and size, comes with a leather sheath. I had kydex pants made by On/Scene Tactical with a firesteel holder. It cuts :)

listen to this man--he is 110% correct

let us know what you get

I haven't had the opportunity to use many of the customs mentioned above but I can vouch for the RAT Cutlery knives and for the Bark River Northstar. The Northstar is my favorite for that size range and although they may be a little on the expensive end you could probably find a nice one second hand for that price. The Fallkniven F1 is also a great choice and right at about $100.

I'm a huge fan of the scandinavian styles. If you don't want to go custom, and want to save a bit of money for a future purchase (there WILL be one) get the Iisakki Järvenpää Puukko Combination Set #5618 (in carbon) for $90 and you have a good two knife set that weighs very little.

That being said, I have no argument with grabbing a rat or barkie.

Christof makes awesome knives and Sierra's sheaths are versatile and look great. I am saving for one or two or three. Check out his web site and support a knife maker who contributes a lot to this forum.

I've seen the Rapid River Skinner and Drop Point that match your Fin and Feather for under $80.

If that doesn't fit the bill, You can find quite a few Bark River offerings that are below your highest price limit.

The good thing with makers like Landi, Breeden, Stomper, NWA and all the others here is that they hold their value. You could buy any of them and if you don't care for it, trade or sell it. You probably won't lose but a couple dollars but you'll learn what works for you and what doesn't.

Check out Blind Horse Knives too. The team there is outstanding.

Just a little more and you can go for a Dozier. My favorite all around fixed blade is my Dozier.

Well, I was cruising the ebay, and I ran across this and it seemed like a good deal. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=300280985046 As you can see I didn't pay all that much for it, Its intended to be used for a while as I save up for something nicer. after I won it I headed over to marble's site to see what sort of knife it exacty was, and I didn't see anything like it on the site. Is this a fake? Is there anyway for me to tell once I get it? Would it make sense for me to send it into Marble's if indeed it is a fake? I do know that you get what you pay for, and I now feel like somewhat of an idiot because I feel that I did get scammed. What do you all think?

The Fallkniven F1 is a great choice. Another one I like is the Buck Vanguard. As koyote mentioned, the scandi's are hard to beat. I really like the Helle knives like the Harding. You can't go wrong with a JK or koyote knife but that's a given.:) I have several From Doug at DPK as well.

There are just flat to many great choices out there. I have done my best to try them all.( didn't even come close ) So many knives, so little time.

There are a lot of good knives out there and I don't think you coul go wrong with a RAT or Barkie, but I have to tell ya, I LOVE my BEAR MGC Feathermate drop point.

I am a big custom fan, any of the makers KGD posted as well as Landar15 and Doug of DP knives should make you happy. I would say narrow it down to a few knives your interested in and then ask us again.

Could you post a pic or link of that. I am having no luck with google:o

christof, how do you do the umlated letters on your computer? i type things in german occasionally, and sometimes i also need them for scandanavian words.

i am also a big fan of scandanavian blades. martiini nakes a puukko for under $30, which is definatly well worth it, not to mention kellam, or stromeng, or wood jewel, or helle ( i could probably fill a page with all the good nordic brands, but ill stop here.). BRKT, RC, and fallkniven are all good, but, in moy opinion, in the world of production knives, legit scandanavian blades are the best value.

if you want to go the custom route, there are quite a few great makers that can get you more than what you want, for less money than you though and in a couple of weeks.

Okay, this is going to sound weird, but I preload some of the odd characters into my emacs kill ring on startup and (since I use emacs for email and chatting and stuff) and then have them available for pasting.
