Fixed Blade Knives w/ a 6" blade or less

I just purchased an Ontario TAK and I can really recommend this as a good all around blade. It is very stout and I couldn't imagine doing anything that would break it. It has a blade of 4.5 inches and G10 scales and comes with a cordura sheath.

Get a Mora 2000 on eBay. Don't bid over fifteen bucks. It's the best general purpose field knife bargain on earth, bar none.

ok - looked at the greco website and i like the way the MST is looking - and you guys were right about the scabbard, looks a little dinky. any suggestions on where i could get a really nice tactical scabbard for the greco MST?

I am suprised no one has mentioned Swamp Rat knives yet. Next time I am in the market for a fixed blade camp knife, that's where I will be headed. Seems like great bang for the buck, and I have never heard anything but positive feedback from owners.

Sorry what I failed to say in my original post was that the Nimravus would also be a good choise thiner blade mean better edge. If it will be a skinnig knife more thena Utility knife I would for sure go with the Nimravus above all else but if you need something that might pry abit go and get Fallkniven.

My only worry with the M2 Nimravus is the britelness of the blade for prying. But hey why not both how can you go wrong then.

actually - i'm not going to be using the knife's blade to pry anything. when ever, i go camping/hunting i usually bring 5 different knives/blades for different usages-
(1) hatchet/axe ~ I currently use the buck field axe but I may invest in the greco hatch-it
(2) skinning knife - currently it's the cold steel master hunter plus with the gut hook
(3) multi-tool - of course, the leatherman supertool and/or the micra
(4) tactical folder - tried and true large classic sebenza
(5) utility knife - which i am currently undecided on and for which i started this thread, but on occasion i use the camillus cam-bk10 becker knife

i don't know if it's over kill, but i don't think you can have too many knives out in the wilderness. anyway, i like the way the greco mst knife looks, but i'd just like a better sheath for it - anyone know where i can get a custom tactical sheath for it?

thanks for all the info, regardless.

Blade Tech makes good sheaths. I recently had one made in Kydex for a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp (sorry, no pixels - can't afford a Canon 230 yet.) I also bought the early Nimravus M2 with the original Kydex sheath and find it more to my liking than the later models (which look tactical nazi western to me.)
All the leather sheaths I have used in the field break down, either going soft and wrinkly, or blowing out. Ditto for nylon - plus they get bulky and outfitted with too many pockets and grommets. Most kydex sheathes won't fail if you fall on them (ever NOT trip in the woods?)
So, to prevent the extra expense, maybe the latest Nimravus with its Kydex holster would fit the bill. You can always cut off the extra slots and clean it up.

The MST is the Greco that I chose as well.

I actually find the sheath to be quite robust and useful in a simple, traditional way. I don't think I'll ever need to get it replaced unless something untoward happens.

The other knives that don't have a snap to hold the blade in (puch style sheath) seem like they might be a bit lacking in the sheath area, though.

I'd recommend getting the MST planning on using the provided sheath. Even if you don't like it and have to have another made you'll still be getting quite a deal.
