fixed blade lanyards

I have never put lanyards on my fixed blades, but am thinking of giving it a try. The guinnea pig is a Gerber Yari with a friction fit concealex sheath - yes, I know, a lanyard could pull the knife out. I may get another sheath for that reason.

I do wonder a little about safety, though. As a volunteer firefighter, I have always had lanyards on my flashlights for presumably the same reason: you don't want to drop the thing and then need it. It isn't a problem to have a dangling flashlight banging around from your wrist, but an unsheathed knife is a different story.

Aside from not stabbing yourselves to death, how do all of you implement your fixed blade lanyards? I have seen some obviously well thought-out lanyard setups, but I heven't a clue as to the finer points of their utility.

beezar,

I usually add a lanyard to my knives that reside in a deep pouch to facilitate easy removal, or to very short knives to increase my grip surface. I rarely make any to wrap around my wrist.

Here is a link to my braided lanyard tutorial for a decorative type pull lanyard. This could be modified with a leather knot or other sliding piece of antler or bead to make an adjustable wrist loop.

Here are a few with short lanyards to make use easier.

I got a tip today from a sheathmaker, he tucks the lanyard with a terminal knob or antler piece between his belt and pants to both lock the knife to you and make the dangling strings less likely to catch on something.

Most of my Large folders and fixed blades carry MilSPec Para-chord lanyards. They come in pretty handy more than I thought they would at first, so I put them on all of them now.

I tie a simple hangman's noose then cut the excess to the same length the melt the ends with a lighter.
