Fixed blade or hatchet?

The Estwing is nice!
I'm in favor of the knife though, but I also use a hatchet.
My favorite is the handforged Hultafors hatchet, as it has a great balance in every grip.

For a large knife I like an eight inch blade like a Fällkniven NL2 Odin or a Scagel Large Bowie, made by Bark River.
A longer blade chops better, but for my needs the 8" is enough.
Nice big blades I have tried are the Fällkniven NL1 Tor and Bark River Golok.

The hatchets like the Estwing has a thicker edgegeometry compared to a knife and will take higher workloads than the knife, but handled with experience the knife is the way to go IMO.

It would be nice to see a pic of Your stag handled antique custom?
Here's my Scagel and NL1.

Nice!! I just posted pics of it
In the custom sub. Under 'antique custom?'

I always take an 8+ inch fixed blade (usually Busse) because i love feeling it sling chunks of wood.
Then there's the comfortable ergonomics and thinner edge it provides for smaller tasks.
It's also more precise and accurate IMO.

Thanks!
It's a traditional German hunting knife and it looks like an older one!
You will find more pic's of the type and the sheaths at the site of German maker Linder.

Chiming in from the frozen North, I like to take a heavy pattern of machete.

I carry a Fiskars sliding saw in my pack because of how little space it takes up and how light it is. I don't use it often, but it's quite handy at times when I need a flat surface or chopping would take too much time/energy.

I would take a high quality machete over both of them. Will out chop the knife and is more often than not lighter than the hatchet. Contact the person above me and he will set you up with a really nice one that will suit exactly what you want to do.

Well, got an estwing hatchet and used it for some bushcraft. It turned out to work really great! I'm glad i got the hatchet instead of the knife because it was really useful an could give me a little more torque for chopping through a fallen tree.

no doubt i'd take a fixed blade, preferably the esee 6 that mighty bastard can chew through just about anything without losing sharpness... and it's an extremely versatile knife man oh man!

My friend wants one of those. I got a mora heavy duty as my fixed blase

I've never wanted to whittle anything before but as Judy Tenuta always said "it could happen".

Sorry, but this cracked me up! I haven't heard about Judy Tenuta in a loooong time. I really enjoyed her Dr. Pepper commercials in years past. "As Judy Tenuta says, it could happen" was a favorite pop culture saying in the early 80's Sorry to change the subject on your thread OP, but just had to comment on this.

Personally, I like a large fixed blade. I feel its more versatile, and when I compared my BK9 to my cheapo lowes hatchet the BK9 also out-chopped it by a large margin. So for me it seems to be pretty much a no brainer.

And I second the folding saw thing. While I like chopping and all, anything over about forearm size I'll reach for a saw if its available.

Thats my two cents.
