Fixed blade recommendation for spec ops

Hi guys,

I have been looking through this forum for some time now and finally decided I would just create an account. After a few days using the search function to narrow my search I have hit a wall, hence the thread.

I am currently looking for a knife for a friend of mine who is deploying with a spec ops/delta/sof/snake eater type unit and on his previous deployment he mentioned that he broke his blade. As a gift for his wedding I am buying him a new one but am not exactly a knife expert.

What we aren't looking for are folders and multis as he is coming down with those. He needs a high quality knife that will not only serve as a CQC weapon but also utility tasks, such as digging, opening ammo crates etc.

After much deliberation and research (and his input of course) I have come up with a few points that should help narrow the search.

1. $500 budget
2. 6-7" blade length
3. convex or scandi grind
4. 0.25" thick (or greater)
5. Full tang
6. Slight recurve
7. secure sheath, easy draw

As I said above, not looking for folders or multis, and as I have seen numerous times on this forum comments about how it will spend most of the time on his belt or it will be stolen are not helpful. There are no unit restrictions, other than the obvious bright colours and crazy designs etc.

Sorry about the long post and all the parameters but when your friends life might depend on a knife at some point then you have to be specific.

Thanks in advance.

Just make sure the handle remains grippy when subjected to arterial spray encountered when it is called upon for covertly deanimating serpents for lunch.

LOL, you read my mind.

Glock 19.
Oh sorry. I forgot what forum I was on......Well, it sounds like your friend has a whole bunch of requirements that will make that knife less.....knife-y and more.......prybar-ish......

It's hard to believe the greatest generation invaded multiple countries and defeated one of the greatest armies of all time using anything less than 6-7" bladed 1/4" thick pryknives.......

How about this one... It's not .250" (just over 3/16") but it's A2 tool steel with a 6" sharpened length.

[Inappropriate language in the picture, sorry]

Okay, so now that we have the obligatory useless comments I see we have moved on.

CM do you know the make/model of that knife?

I figure that is his own design.

A little smaller than what you posted is a Winkler Belt knife with rubber(?) grips...great knife.

Is this too obvious a choice...Chris Reeve Green Beret 😀
Heck of a knife...7" blade but theres a 5.5" version I like even more.

Actually I quite liked the look of the CRK green beret, a bit thinner than I hopes at .22" but little in it. Thanks for the replies

OP is it thickness or toughness that you're after? One does not always equal the other. Thickness does almost always equal extra weight to lug around though.

Charlie Mike has ""been-there-done-that", and I think he could make a perfect carry piece, working from that experience. We've seen his skills improve dramatically over the last couple of years. I'd be happy to carry anything he makes if I was deploying.

Yup... That was me... Mosul 2003. Army infantry.

If you don't go the custom route, it sounds like the zt 100 is what you want. It's not as thick, nor as long, but 3v is as tough as I have heard of

Strider, Grayman, TOPS, Busse(?) to name a few more well known makers. Plenty of custom makers in that price range that will pretty much make what you want as well.
Good luck.
