Fixed Blade Recommendation

I'm looking for a good fixed blade knife for outdoor use for everything from general yard work to hunting and camping. It needs to have a blade length of 3.5 to 4 inches and fit within a $170 budget. Here's the kicker, I'm left handed so a lefty compatible sheath is a big plus.

Note: I like the Bark River Gunny knife, just not the sheath as it rides to high and no left hand carry option.

Pick up a Rodent Solution for $125 new and have a custom maker here build a sheath any way you want for the $45.

What's the blade length on the Rodent Solution? I know the blade length on the Rodent 4 is 4 5/8, but I think a slightly shorter cutting edge because of the forward coil?

In order of preference:

1. TOPS Mil-SPIE 3 - about $90.00

2. ESEE 3 - about $90.00

3. R Hinderer Flashpoint - about $150.00 (My fave, I have 3, and they're definitely not for sale....and they're impossible to get)

** Prices quoted are average street prices when I purchased mine.

Have Alan Davis make you a fixed blade the way you want it. He makes the sheaths too!! :D Kevin

I sometimes sound like a broken record, but I suggest a Kabar Becker BK-16 or BK-17. Great versatile knife and easy on the wallet as these things go.

Lot of great recommendations here. I gotta +1 the Rodent Solution, ESEE 3 and the BK16 and 17 cant go wrong with any of them.

I always thought the BM Nimravus was a great all around fixed blade that never got much praise it seemed it was not a pry bar survival knife though. They made several sheaths over the years not sure which if any would be left hand compatible. The "Cub" version was a 3.65" blade at 4 oz, and the full size a 4.5" blade at 5.8 oz. I've always thought the cub was the closest thing to an EDC fixed blade I've found but part of that is the handle just fits my hand really well. I much prefer the G10 handles though to the Al version. Should be no problem finding them under $170.

All Bark River sheaths can be had in black or brown, left or right handed.

I believe there are some alternate sheaths available for the Gunny.

Contact one of the dealers.

Another vote for the Fallkniven F1. I own two and never looked at another fixed blade again.
