Hi everyone.

I'm looking for a multipurpose fixed blade knife that i can use to pry and break into and out of things. I have up to 300 bucks to blow on this knife so money really isnt a problem.

Here is what im looking for:

6 - 8 inch blade
Excellent Steel quality
Drop point or Tanto
Well balanced
Confortable Grip

Naturally I've looked at the MOD Mark V, Darkops line, and the Extrema Ratio line. They all look like what I'm after but the Darkops is too new and Frank Miller hasnt provided me with any information as to the quality and/or testing of the CTV2 steel that they are using. The E.R. line has some great looking knives but once again i have never heard of them or any reviews on their knives. Which leaves me with the Mark V.

Any suggestions as to a good fixed blade?

Thanks

This would be my choice for a mulitpurpose knife.

Swamp Rat Camp Tramp - Hidden tang, respirene C handle
Swamp Rat Ratweiler - full tang, micarta scale

Tough, sharp knife for less than $200. Lifetime guarantee.

Spend the rest of your budget for a custom sheath.

If you want a sharpened pry-bar, get a Cold Steel Recon Scout.:).

Don't fail to look at one of the larger Beckers. They are tough as nails, and razor sharp beyond anything you would expect in such a big knife, and would leave you with quite a bit of change. P.S. The Desert Tan models are just very cool looking IMHO.

I've used a factory second recon scout from cold steel for years to hack down hickory trees and other hard woods to make walking sticks. After hackin them down I use it to debark them and I have always been impressed with how well this knife performed and kept it's edge. I highly recommend it.

I'd still be using it if I hadn't given it to my son to use over in Iraq. He loves it and said several of the guys in his unit have given up on their Sog Seal knives and got one of the recon scouts instead because it just held up better and they like the grip better for hot sweaty hands in the desert. (120 degrees in the shade there )

If you are cutting wood mostly the RS is a great choice. If you intend to slice some meat now and then too and still want to be able to do some wood cutting or chopping or splitting small pieces for firewood you might want to consider the thinner and shorter SRK (survival rescue knife). You can obtain a factory second SRK for under 50 bucks and I can tell you you'll never know it is a second. BTW> My CS catalog says the Moro Barong is $139.99.

Same size, a bit tougher, the Busse Steel Heart-E or the new Natural Outlaw. A bit more expensive from a sister company with the same lifetime guarantee and INFI steel. Either the Rat or the Busse will more than fill your needs. Do yourself a favor and check both of them out.

I'd get the BK7, RAT7 or SRK and spend the other $200+ on some beers to celebrate your good choice :D

Seriously, I've owned all three of these and they have taken more than I could dish out. I upgraded from the SRK to the BK7 because I thought I needed a slightly longer blade, the BK7 was stolen and I replaced it with the RAT7. All have worked fine as bush blades, doing chopping digging and scraping. My brother has been using the SRK for the past couple of years and aside from some markings in the coating from splitting wood it still looks new. The rubber handle has held up well.

you said you had $300? get a Strider.

if you wanted a cheap and good prybar, get a Becker.

Try Tops Knives. They make af ew models that have pry bars built into the handle. I think they are about half your budget, which to us nuts means more knives (not more money in pocket.)

Another vote for the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp - I've used mine for a wide range of things. One tough user.

Don't forget to take a look at the Fehrman knives too. Heard good thing about them. Definitely worth your attention.

kee ;)

I am gonna second the vote for cold steel... if you like tanto however, I say go with the Recon Tanto. Carbon V steel, 7 inch blade, well balanced, and the grip is just as comfortable as the SRK (actually, it is almost identical)
