I'm looking at different small/med fixed blades to EDC.Budget is up to $150(maybe more)
I prefer tool steels, but not limited to them.I like full, exposed tangs too.

I really like RAT knives, but I don't want anything with a coating.I prefer a mirror polished finish to anything else.

Also,I don't like cord wrapped handles.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your suggestions,:)

John

I like Moki knives. They have made blades for Spyderco and Al Mar in the past and there fit and finish is top notch! This model is my current a little bird and trout. Moki's are also handmade and come with a good leather sheath.

What kind of knife are you looking for? What purpose? Have you looked at the Bark River line? They have lots that fit your criteria.

The kind of knife would be an all purpose, utility type blade(drop, spear, wharnie or clip point?) with micarta,G10 or wood scales. The purpose would be mostly light cutting chores & EDC,with a comfortable (possible horizontal carry) sheath < very important!

Yes,I've seen & have a few Barkies.Their great knives.I'm just looking for something different.

I am a new person to it all but after my research (and budget) I determined the Benchmade Rant 10502 was exactly what I needed in a fixed. $43 - $46, 440c, 4.5" (one big reason for me. I wanted that size.), santoprene handle; drop or clip point (drop for me), sheath; the benchmade name.

Bark River Aurora or Bravo-I.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.

I think I'm gonna go custom on this one...though it's not written in stone yet.

Richard J is making me a knife to these specs.I'll post pics, when I get it.

Thanks again everyone:)

it was 41 outside today so i went out and ground your knife jon. its ready for heat treat which i hope to get done this weekend or next week.

I am quite anxious to see this blade! Whatever it's makeup, whatever it's shape, whatever it's scale material, I would expect it will be razor flappin sharp!

here is a picture of the knife. i still have to heat treat it yet. it will have some kind of nice wood that has to be picked out yet. it will be "flappin razor sharp" too :D. its made from 1075 which is all i use since i know it well.

Now THAT is cool AND unusual! Very nice, Richard! Probably JTR spec'd it, so kudos to you too JTR.

It has an almost 3-D look to it, like it's made of twisted metal...almost as if, after grinding the blade, the handle was twisted 180 degrees! I know it's a delusion, but it looks cool. Interesting.........

Keep the blueprints on that knife Richard! I made need to contact you after Christmas......

Falkniven S1 forest knife. Personally a 5" blade is perfect for most tasks. One of my favorites is a Spyderco Fred Perrin Street Bowie in VG 10 steel, but it is a bit fragile. My son in law broke one smashing garlic. I wouldn't use a 5" blade for chopping as that should be the domain of larger thicker blades or hand axes. I just spent the last hour before logging on here looking for a 5" utility knife to include in my urban PSK. There is a SAR 5 on ebay auction ending tonight that is sweet, but expensive at at least $255.

where jtr lives, they have a 4" limit on blade length. thanks for reminding me to make a pattern of jons knife. i have patterns of every knife i made.

The new Spyderco Mule may not be a bad choice. It's my go to knife for all the tasks around the home, and appears to meet all your requirements. Interesting steel, too.
