Fixed blade suggestions...survival/camping knife

I don't do much chopping when i camp, so for me, a Ratmandu or bravo-1 are about all I need for camping. And I just ordered both.. guess i'll keep the one I like the most.. heres hoping i don't like both equally for my bank account's sake.

Sounds like you just need to pick the model that suits you. I feel like a "pass it down" knife should have some elegance and say something about you years from now when your child says "and this one was my Dads knife".

A Randall Model 5 or Pathfinder, Reeve 1 piece since they are unique and will not be made any longer...a Sable or Mountaineer, or if they suit you a Busse custom shop, maybe a smaller active duty or mean street.

Question: when you say 'one-piece' do you mean a knife where the entire handle is machined from the same piece of steel as the blade? Or do you mean a fixed blade knife where the blade tang extends the full length and width of the handle?

If you mean the former then your options are very limited--which might tell you something about the popularity and actual need for that style of knife.

Yep, I was talking about the former, and I know there's not a lot of options either. :grumpy: Re the popularity, I was looking more at the fewer parts, the fewer things to go wrong; however, some of the better made custom & semi-customs will probably fit this bill, also.

The flipside is a bulletproof full-length tang with a guard that's proven itself as nearly indestructible. I am starting the search for the more lesser known makers, including the custom folks here on the forum, hence this is why I figured this is the best place to ask the question.

Anyway, thanks for the insight thus far. I'll be culling through the web in the next few days to see about those you all have suggested so far.

Thanks...:D:thumbup:

$600? You can have any standard model knife you like basically.

I would drop the $260 on a Sierra Scout by NWA. Handmade in Michigan, 5" drop point. Fantastic knife.
