Howdy folks,

I'vd got a great Spydie Endura and a "beater" Kershaw Black Scallion, but I'd like to have a fixed blade knife for CCW as a folder may not be accessible or readily deployable in some circumstances.

First and foremost I DO live in a state that allows FB carry under 5.5", though something THAT long may not be exactly practical for the purpose mentioned. I have no formal martial arts/knife fighting training (feel free to throw some suggestions at me ), so this really is a last ditch weapon.

Ideally I'd like to spend less than $150.

Skip the martial arts and get a gun for SD. Cheaper and more reliable.

Even cheaper, use common sense and avoid trouble spots.

The above advice re avoiding trouble, or carrying a gun for CCW is very good.

If you're absolutely set on a fixed blade, check out a Bark River Slither. Surprisingly effective.

One of my favorites for the purpose!

The Slither comes right in at 5" IIRC.

I don't have one, but another BR knife that would do good SD service is the Hedgehog. I've been wanting to get one of those for quite a while.....

Lots of small custom knives in that price range. Check out the For Sale By Maker forum section. New stuff listed all the time. The best deals tend to go fast, so hawk-eye the forum and be prepared to jump when something comes up.

I recently recieved my "Benchmade Activator Plus", Mike Snody design. Gotta say I really love it !! Been my EDC since I got it. Check it out.

Viking Tactics "Assault" knife. Right now they are taking orders for the 1st 100 pieces at $119.00. Eventualy they will be $149.95

I really like nice custom knives and have a lot of them. i also have a black belt in a martial art and scars to prove I've practiced knife techniques. I also have a BM Nimravus. If you're not into knives and won't use it for much other than self defense, I'd be tempted to go with something cheaper, slimmer, and lighter. One of those CRKT Kiss's might be ok. I have one. I might wrap the handle with paracord or something to provide more grip for thrusts; but it would slash... Check out a variety and find what feels right for you.

Spyderco Perrin Bowie w/ 5" blade for $129 onj internet. It is discontinued from Spyderco. I bought mine for $60 a few years ago from the Spydreco factory store. The sheath is the berries, and the blade is wicked. So sharp its scarey. But don't be scared, don't be afraid. Only babies are afraid and your not a baby.

You wound me ;)

Of course common sense is the ideal "weapon," but if common sense were all it took to avoid trouble and stay alive, I wouldn't be in the process of applying for a CHL, saving up for a firearm and rounding out my personal defense options for as many environments and situations as possible.

I know I'm a new poster here and all, but I do understand a knife and a few dozen viewings of Bourne Identity/Supremacy/Ultimatum does not make me a fliptastic ninja master... I just want a nice knife and maybe some advice to go with it concerning some fun and practical training.

Keep the suggestions coming :D

If I were to carry a fixed blade concealed, I'd look at the Spyderco Street Beat. About $150, great blade and ergos.

Welcome to the forums:).

If you can legally carry a FB concealed, I'd recommend the RAT3 (I prefer D2, but that's me). 3 1/4" blade should be sufficient, the clip that comes with it is ideal for IWB carry, & it comes with a Tek-Lok for additional options.

Personally, I like neck carry for a fixed blade. In Cal., a concealed fixed blade less than 2" is OK (Kind of a grey area). Because of that, a HAK, Spyderco SPOT, or similar short blade FB is ideal.

+1

However....I carry a knife 100% of the time. Not for SD but capable if being pressed into such service.
