I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a great fixed blade Survival/Military knife.. What make and size does the US and Canadian Militaries carry?? What should I look for in one of these hard use survival type knives?? Approx what price can I get a great quality, sturdy performer for years to come??? If your life was on the line what fixed blade would you be carrying??

swamp rat knife works.....pick the one with the blade length you need.

then get a leatherman wave or victorinox swisstool (or something similar) to go with it.

you need a multitool and a knife together.

buy a spec ops sheath....it has a pouch on the front to hold the multitool.

IF i had to have only one of these on me, i would take the multitool....but of course i always have both..... :D

What Bill_G said, only I'll take the Rat if I can only have one knife: I've never needed a screw driver in the bush.

Ah, but you are soooo wrong...
I've had to repair essential equipment as well as luxury items in the field all the time. A screwdriver saves the day...

point well taken djolney :)

however, not all survival is in the bush. i live right near three mile island in harrisburg PA...and for me, my survival situation is urban/surburban.

a multitool, Cuda Maxx and $300 in twenties should get me thru most anything here.......cash will buy what i need in an urban disaster. the bush? i wouldn't last a day in the bush......no experience there

Any appropriate configuration from Swamp Rat or Fallkniven would make an excellent choice for a general purpose, fixed blade survival knife.

Both companies make outstanding, affordable knives.

Big: Camp Tramp or A2

Med/Small: Howling Rat or F1/A1

Take a look at the Becker line sold by Camillus. These robust knives are made of Carbon V steel and are strong enough for chopping, pounding and prying. They are also shaving sharp and surpirsingly good slicers for big knives. The sheaths have pockets for extra stuff (Bic, sharpener, multi tool, etc.). They are about $50 bucks and a steal at that price. I have the Becker BK 10 Crewman (5.5" blade), which I have used around home for various outdoors chores for a few weeks, but I have not taken it camping yet.

I love my Randall Model 14, designed to be the ultimate combat/utility. It is rather pricey, though, as are all Randalls. It is the only high-end knife I have been able to afford.

You could do worse than the standard Marine Combat, as made by Camillus or Kabar.

Someone said the Beckers have been changed recently to solve the problem of slippery handles, so a recent Becker would make a good choice.

It is frequently said that a relatively small knife is most useful for survival purposes. The inexpensive Swedish Mora knives are often recommended as suitable for a small survival knife.

Man, there's Pennsy dudes all over these forums, PA is knife country!

Oh, and let's throw the Al Mar SERE Operator in the mix...

I'm going to have to side with fallkniven on this one

(it might be becasue they aren't from the US though)

What does that mean? You have a problem with the USA? Please clarify this ignorant post.

In an urban environment I'm with you. Cash and a multi tool are king.

I'm a minimalist in the bush: knife, food, water, fire making gear, first aid kit, and my swag.

Cold Steel SRK. Not new, not fancy, not even really popular anymore...but it works very well, and I've beat the sh-t out of mine. I've used it for survival and camp chores, butchering and dressing out game. I carried it on my Web gear for quite a while as well. A great all around knife.

Fixed blades: Swamp Rat, Fallkniven and Becker. Pick any model you like. Don't know what the military endorses.

i am partial but i love my BM Nimravus (which is probably not has good as the swamp rat, but when you like a blade.... ) , so i'll go with this one, plus the usual red light SAK, and i think i could andle many situations...

another vote for the Swamp . But you will wait 8-12 weeks but it is worth it. The Warrenty is no questions asked :)
