Fixed blade survival/military knife???

One of the knives that I don't leave the house without is my KA-BAR.I wear mine scout style in the small of my back in a custom leather sheath that I can draw from in a split second if need be.I dig, slice, carve, clean game, hack and slash. The old motto "If i ain't broke don't fix it"fits here.Correct me if I'm wrong but where better to test a knife than on the battlefield???It's the ultimate survival situation. The KA-BAR in my mind is a prooven survival knife.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a great fixed blade Survival/Military knife.. What make and size does the US and Canadian Militaries carry?? What should I look for in one of these hard use survival type knives?? Approx what price can I get a great quality, sturdy performer for years to come??? If your life was on the line what fixed blade would you be carrying??

The Canadian Forces issue Gerber multitools; the Engineers get SOG multitools with additional widgets.

As for knives, the Beckers are great bang for the buck, and with the money you save from not buying a Randall or Fallkniven you can round out your loadout with a Victorinox Rucksack.

If money is an issue, you can't go wrong with a Cold Steel Trail Master. There are alot of great suggestions in this thread, but they are out of my personal price range. I traded for a CS Trail Master a couple months back and I love it. Carbon V steel, sharp, solid knife, nice sheath comes with it too. If you can afford a custom handmade knife, go for it. Just don't get something that looks too nice to actually use.

of course, for 20-30 bucks more than the trailmaster, you can get the vastly superior Battle Rat From Swamp Rat- and feel secure with your included unlimited warranty. also, you can chop all day, and the res C handles wont tear up your hand like the trail master's does. :D
