Is their a Fixed blade that will chop as well as my Gransfors Bruks wildlife hatchet?

Maybe a kukri? But fixed blades are simply not as efficient as axes for chopping, or even your hatchet.

Thanks Alberta.

Hatchetjack,

Good question, I should have clarified the uses I was planning.

Primarily I use the Gransfors to cut down saplings that I make staffs/canes out of.

At max they are about 2-3 inches in diameter.

I had considered something in the heavy Busse line, but was curious if they would be as comforatable, and perform as well in those applications.

The Gransfors is just so sharp, and has such great penetration due to the weight, and geometry of the grind. - don't know if there is an equal in the knife field..

If you post this question over in the Himalayan Imports Cantina, you should get some helpful and informative responses.

My Cold Steel machete will take down a soild 2" sapling in a single swing; that good enough?

On smaller diameter wood like that, yes, you should be able to find a fixed blade that will be more efficient than a hatchet. Smaller diameter woods/brush respond better to speed rather than momentum, so you want length rather than weight.

I'm guessing that generally you'll try to snick the saplings off near the base, so you'll be using the very tip of the blade a lot. The only khuk I have experience with was not very useful for tip cuts when I got it. (I have since modified it extensively to be better in this regard) When I'm clearing 'em from around buildings on the farm, I generally try to cut them at or below ground level so I don't trip over the stump in the dark.
