what would you recommend as a decent fixed blade for under 100$ ? OK, now for those narrow-your-question-replys

: tactical/light utility use

thank you

I don't own any personally, but I believe the Greco knives have an enviable reputation in this sector. The Benchmade Nimravus is probably a good choice here as well. Good luck

How about a fixed blade for under $50?

Although I haven't seen them in person, CRKT has the "Big Sky Hunters" line. These are a series of four different AUS-6 blade/synthetic handle (zytel?) fixed blades, with leather sheaths, ranging from about 3.75 inches to 6.5 inches in blade length.

They sell for about $30 on the net. You can view them at CRKT's website: www.crkt.com

Camillus/Terzuola CQB1. Very nicely done knife in an vercitial, great sheath.

If you want something a bit smaller, the CQB2 will probably fit the bill.

The little becker is awesome...companion.

Also, ANY Greco is worth a try, I have two and love them.

Cold Steel has great stuff too, try the SRK.

Get TWO knives. One should be a Fallkniven if your budget can still get you two. The other could be an SRK or Buck Nighthawk or even another Fallkniven depending on which two you get.

Many on the Forums go to great lengths to evaluate the resistance of their particular knife choice to the threats of corrosion, breakage, etcetra. What about the threat of loss or theft? For your intended uses, "tactical and light utility" you will likely not push the envelope of a Chris Reeve One Piece or a Busse, so why pay for it?

For utility, not necessarily light either, the Becker Campanion is nice, but I like the the Fallknivens better for the money. Then get another "beater/user don't-care-if-I-lose 'er" like the SRK or Nighthawk.

I really like spending OPM (other people's money)

If you want to go really cheap, look at the Mora blades. You can get them from 3" to 6" in carbon steel with wooden handles, stainless or carbon with plastic handles.

Spyderco Moran wins this contest. Am surprised no one has mentioned it before.

There is a maker in W.Va. named Tilton Bowen(you can get his info in the back of the Knives Annuals). He makes heavy duty general purpose and hunting knives for about $65-85. He uses excellent carbon steel and browns it to inhibit rust and either pakkawood or micarta handles. His leather sheaths are good too.

One of my favorite utility knives is a 4in carbon steel Eriksson Mora knife, with a plastic handle and sheath. Works great on boxes, rope, wood, apples, carrots, and such. I found a handful for $5 each at a local store, but they might cost as much $10 at other places. Eriksson and Frosts also larger and smaller ones. Such knives complement a larger one well, say a 6in to 7in.

I too would recomend the cold steel SRK or the Camillus air force survival knife. Ontario makes some good knives too for the money. The Buck Knighthawk is also a good one Buck has other fixed blades that would work. There are so many to chose from good luck in your serch.Let us know what you decide on.

wow.. thanks for your advice. My main problem is that Erlangen lacks of knife shops, so I won't really be able to handle one before buying. I'll need some time gathering information at BFC and on the internet.

I don't believe in more money = better knife, but can you expect to get a good knife for 10$ ?!?

again thanks for your feedback

Seb

A $5 to $10 Mora knife is a candidate for one of the best peformance to price ratios around. The relatively thin blades on the ones that I have, I have a couple of different Erikssons, a Frosts, and a few Eriksson blades, coupled with the hard RC60 carbon steel make for excellent cutting performance. One can get steel with better edge holding, and can certainly get fancier handles, sheaths, and such, but I haven't seen any fixed blades that come close for $10, excluding the discontnued Cold Steel butcher style knives and the Barteaux economy model machetes.

For a step up in a heavier duty knife the Anzas, made from annealed files, are nice with some models starting at $20 to $30. The 3in bladed #4 that I have takes a very nice edge. Another favorite in the same price range, that is unfortunately discontinued and evidently almost impossible to find in the US, is the Hubertus 4in carbon steel 'Bowie', although people in Germany called it a Scout knife or pathfinder. It has a stacked leather handle, a simple sheath, takes a very nice edge, and was 50DM.

The Big Sky modles from CRKt are nice.

In regards to the $10 knife. I own three Ericksons, a Martini, a Kellam, and two Frosts. For the money they cannot be beat, and they are quality. I especially like the Kellam, the handle is very comfortable. I am considering investing in a sheath set for it, so as to make it part of the regular line-up.

I think that the inexpensive knives get too little attention. For $100 dollars you can get a machete (Barteaux/Martindale), a utility knife (Frost, Erickson, Kellam, Martini, Mora) and an axe (Madison) and still have change.

Are these actually out yet? I did and extensive search, just last week, of all the internet sites in my index and couldn't find a single one.

Do you have one? Do you have any good pics of it? Or scans? The only picture I have seen, from James Mattis, made it look like the spine of the blade angled UP from the line of the handle. Odd looking.
