Fixed blade

I recently completed my "Quest for the Big Four Folders" (Umnumzaan, Sebenza, Strider SMF and the XM-18) with satisfactory results (bought them all, of course).

With all my collecting needs satisfied (for now, who am I kidding?), what I'm looking for is the fixed blade that will keep me company in most of my outdoor activities. What I want is something high quality, good fit and finish, easy to sharpen and maintain.

What I'll do with it is a little bit of everything. Some light batoning, garden work, a little wood carving when needed. It also may see some salt water from time to time. It can't be too long and something with a blade around 4" would be ideal (no longer than 5" and no shorter than 3.5" is my range).

I'm thinking something in the lines of the Fallkniven F1 and the Chris Reeve Nyala. Money is not an issue within reasonable boundaries.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Ive been on a busse family blade kick lately so Ill show you what I like

#5 (Busse Boss St) & #6 (Swamp Rat hrlm) from top

The rat will rust easily around salt water if the coating is removed. Gets super sharp and stays that way for ever. They both have the best warranties in the business.

Another pic of hrlm

Good luck to your hunt

Get the F1 with the Zytel sheath. You won't find a finer fixed blade for the size, weight, and price.

SYKW, Dumpster Mutt

Strider, EB-S ( A bushcrafter on Steroids ), RW,

Tom Krein, Beast

all of these are great choices! The SYKW will rust so take off the coating and patina the shit out of it!

Personally, my go-to-for-everything knives are at the upper end of your range. One is the Swamp Rat Ratmandu (5" blade), and the other is my Busse BATAC (5.5" blade):

I believe the Ratmandu is currently still available for order through Swamp Rat.

This works as a pocket sheath and IWB sheath. I also have a green Spec Ops sheath for this knife.
This is the one I've been carrying most these days.

Go with the Falkniven or a stainless Bark River and won't be disappointed.

I tried to find this information everywhere with poor results. How much does the Boss Street weigh?

Entrek Badger/Javalina, Becker BK2/BK7, RAT Cutlery RC5 or 6, (the 4's handle is like trying to hold onto a bar of prison soap) A number of TOPS blades (I like the looks of the black rhino and cochise ranger alot) Bark River Bravo 1 and a number of other blades from them, Cold Steel SRK in Carbon V, Benchmade CSK2, Scrapyard, Fehrman, there are so many choices from manufacturers. Spend a few days in the maker's forums to see prices and examples of what some of those guys can do.

I'm thinking something in the lines of the Fallkniven F1 and the Chris Reeve Nyala.

Have both...both are great...but different. I have been thinking about which I'd choose...probably the Nyala, but it's a close call. Probably the Nyala because of the level of craft and art. If you're not comfortable with convex edges or don't want to learn how to sharpen them, the F1 would not be a great choice.

Whoa, the F1's got a convex edge? It's not for me then. I'm having trouble trying to sharpen a friend's cheapo knife with a convex edge. So, the F1 is out of the equation.

Does the Busse also have a convex edge? The Boss Street is starting to look pretty good.
