I have a San Mai Hatamoto, and have had this particular one for a couple of years via ebay. Always had a bit of blade play up and down. Liner would move etc. But it never ever failed to unlock, no matter how hard I hit the damn thing on the spine. So today I am looking at it thinking how much I like the knife but the blade play was putting me off.

So take it apart and am cyphering it out as to why the blade play cause the lock appears to contact it at the back of the tang like it should. Heck with it I say and bend the titanium in a bit. I don't what they do to this stuff but it was actually pretty darn hard to bend, matter of fact I didn't really think I bent it at all. And if I did it wasn't much, but it was enough to cure it! Locks up tight as a drum now and still doesn't unlock one iota no matter how hard I hit the spine! I figured what the hell, it is kind of broke anyways so smash it ya know. What is wierd too is that I thought with the bending it would contact further on the tang but that doesn't seem to be the case. Still the same contact point so what the heck.

I sharpened this baby up and voila, an old friend back in the pocket for a while. Takes a wicked hard edge. You know no burr or wire edge formed at all, not even on the tanto portion. I might screw around with it some more bend a bit more but I'll tell ya it is a stiff ass locking bar on this knife. So that's it, I am happy. keepem sharp

Cool story.
I would have sent it in myself if possible but always cool if you can fix stuff yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. I have a Hatamoto too, and I wouldn't want to part with it either. Quality item, no doubt. Mine locks up like a tank with no play, but if it develops I'll try your technique. Cheers.
