Fixed my SOCFK Blade/Liner Rubbing Problem!!!

I have a Black-T Spearpoint SOCFK #054 that I use only for suit and tie affairs. The blade was off center and the backside rubbed the RH liner upon opening with thumb pressure. Well, Saturday I took it apart, cleaned it, applied judicious amounts of Militec-1, and tried to figure out how to solve the rubbing problem. I noticed that on the LH liner, there is a little tang with a ball bearing that was pushing on the blade. So I bent it back ever so slightly and now the blade is perfectly centered, and it no longer rubs. I noticed my CQC7's don't have this, but I remember the Commanders do.

So if you have a rubbing problem, try this, it beats sending back to EKI.

I also waved four CQC7's this weekend[one is a BM].

Hey Dude,

Can you take the knife back apart and perhaps point it out to those having problems? Then they can fix them up.

Also, the Waved 7s, pics?

Will try to get access to a digital camera. Who can I e-mail the pics to so they can get posted?

John,
Pics are in the mail. Thanks.

I only had access to a digital camera at work, so all I could photograph was my daily carry SOCFK, and my work CQC7B, now waved. I hope the pictures show the little leaf spring I was talking about on the SOCFK and Commander.

I also included a pic of the lock up on my waved-7 I use at work. It is as far to the right as I would like it to go.

I bought this new about six to seven months ago. Is it still safe?

Here are pictures for the post. I signed up for Photopoint.

This is the "Leaf Spring on the SOCFK's and Commanders. I adjusted it[reduced pressure] to keep the blade from rubbing the opposite liner:

These are two of my self-waved CQC7B's:

Here is the liner lock up on the bead blasted Emerson. It is WAY to the right. Is it too far to be safe?

Brig,

OK, so you pulled the small "spring with bearing" AWAY from the blade? Gotcha. Future reference.

Brig, I am gonna try to get you through that liner lock problem with your BB '7. First, it does NOT appear to be a problem from the pics, and I say that only because the liner has not passed the tang of the blade (all the way to the right. If you can shove the liner past the tang (to the right) with firm thumb pressure, you have a problem.

Does the liner disengage from the tang easily? Or, does it 'stick' a little?(preferred) If it disengages easily, it may do so (unwanted) in certain grips. REMOVE all of the lube from these bearing contact surfaces (brakecleen, Gun scrubber, tricloroethane or other clorinated solvent.)
A good first step. BTW, don't get solvent on the scales......duh!

Next, check the integrity of the STOP PIN, which is the pin at the top of the grip that the cutout in the tang of the blade contacts (or, slams into, depending how you open) when it is fully open. I do not have a EK '7 (yet,) but I would not be suprised to find that the pin is drilled slightly off center, to create an eccentric adjustment for the lockup. You may need to rotate it slightly to adjust. Examine the pin closely for signs of wear, as well as the screw and holes in the liner....any wear here can cause the blade to open a little more than it should, causing the liner to move more to the right.

You have probably tried this, but don't forget to adjust the pivot screw. Also, examine all aspects of the pivot to see if something does not look right.

With all of this said, be assured that if you are satisfied with the lockup as it is right now, there is probably NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN that the liner is as far to the right as it is. Just keep an eye on it.

By all means, if you are NOT satisfied with the lockup after doing what you feel comfortable, send that knife back to EKI for a tune-up.

As I've said before, liner locks are not quite as simple as they seem, but with a little tweaking, you should be able to get it right. There is complex geometry in there! It's amazing to me that they hold up as well as they do, but good machining in the first place (CNC) probably does minimize the amount of hand work needed at the factory to get good results.

I'll look forward to hearing how you made out with it.

Joe

Joe,
Thanks for the tips. I loosened, but did NOT remove, all screws except the clip screws, held the knife lock up[on it's spine] and pushed the liner with the lock forward with my thumb, and the other liner backwards with my fingers of my left hand. Got the lock dead center in the blade, held it there, and tightened all the screws. Now the liner locks up pretty much dead center, but when closed, the blade is a touch off center.
