Fixed or folder for personal security (Work travel)

Not to be contrary but mace on a flight is a bad idea. I've read about pressure changes causing mace to leak into the air. Since the air the air supply is shared on a plane you run the risk of blinding the pilots.

Have you checked out the CS American Lawman....3.5"....AUS8 steel....Triad locking (I think)....sounds good for you!!

Funny you said that as I'm contemplating either that or the Recon 1. I'm back in Mexico, Cuernavaca this time and lost my luggage. I flew in to Mexico City yesterday and my bag didn't get here until a couple hours ago. My Endura was still in my bag, but if it wasn't I wouldn't have been too upset because it wasn't expensive. It made me think twice about getting something expensive.

I’m in Mexico city now, if you need a hand locating your bag ,I have some connections there. Let me know.

Thanks, they brought the bag to me. I'm flying back home today. I ordered a CS Recon 1 clip point, plain edge, that I'll get on Friday. Hopefully I like it.

Mace or a stun gun would be the best for a true SD option. If you do insist on a knife, I would look at a smaller neck knife. Keep it very sharp, and it will work as well or better than a larger blade. A smaller knife would also be easier to justify as tool, not a weapon. Or you could go with a hammer, like somebody else said, it would be the easiest to justify as a tool.
He said he travels all over North and South America
Mace and stun guns are both prohibited weapons in Canada as are knives that can be flicked open

+1 to Bud Nealy. Also, Shivworks does innovative stuff, Hideaway Knife, and Blackhawk.

Cold Steel's folding boot dagger (Counterpoint?) might work, too.

If you can find something by Polkowski, his work was geared for combat/utility, with good carry rigs.

Some of these are semi-custom or mid-tech, and might be more than you want to donate to Las Federales....

Regardless of the use, my recommendation is always a fixed blade. The only reason not to go for a fixed blade is other circumstances such as restrictions.

I realize that the times that the knife is NOT in use may dictate the compact nature of a folder, and I do not wish to debate folder vs fixed. However, if you can comfortably and legally carry a fixed blade, why wouldn't you?

I have travelled a good bit as well. If you train with it, a Victorinox One Hand Trekker will work and so will a Leatherman Charge or Surge. Neither is as likely to get you in trouble and are easily explained.

However, I prefer the Spyderco Street Beat for fixed blade carry and a Strider for folder SD. The Strider would be outside your budget so I would suggest either a ZT 350 or Spyderco PPT or serrated Police.

I do strongly recommend the multitool option as it will work with training and is less likely to cause problems.

This is what I picked up, and it will accompany me to Guatemala tomorrow.
