Fixed or Folder?

Since we have some bandwidth available, lets get back to basics...

Which do you prefer for everyday carry? Not in an ideal world, but our own.

I admit that I love the action of a well made folder, and the ease and convenience of carry are also strong points in their favor. But I recently tried using a few small fixed blades at work, and I find that I can get away with carrying a 7” fixed blade with no difficulty, and the ease and reliability of performance is great.

St. James,
Ideally both. I actually carry. A pocket knife I made several years back, and any one of several fixed blade. I find that certain carry positions with a fixed blade, are super comfortable. Highly unnoticeable (yet not concealed). Also very very fast. My favorite fixed blade carry position at this time is inverted hanging from my front right pocket.

Lynn;

I was hoping for the benifit of some of the "slower minded", (me!), that maybe you could explain what you mean by carring
"inverted, hanging from my front pocket."
thanks

stjames,

When you say 7" fixed blade, do you mean overall length or blade length. I'm guessing overall length.

In the past, I have carried fixed blades outside the home (up to a 5" blade). Now, I stick with folders to stay within the concealed carry laws.

AY, OAL, the latest being a Sniper by Lynn. I am writing this during a scene (backstage at the Opera) and have the knife in a across the right front waist band carry, with the handle just extending into the "fifth pocket" area. A very quick and easy deployment.

By "inverted" Lynn must mean hanging with the handle strait down via a Kydex clip that he offers. He says he carries his on the shirt pocket, but last night at dinner I hung the blade from my left inside coat pocket. It is such a thin, flat sliver of steel that is simply dissapeared. I am begining to see the difference between "tactical" and "utility" a little clearer now.

On other notes, I always have a 2"-3" "gents" folder next to my wallet for those little, everyday things in polite company. My "apple and sandwich" knife.

Inverted means upside down. I like to carry my "BACK UP SERIES" knives inverted hanging from my front right pocket via a micarta clip mounted opening down at the point end of the sheath. Kind of hard to explain, but very easy to carry.

Axel,
I wear my fixed blades in plain view. Nobody ever even seems to notice. The only exception, is knife lovers. They notice, and have positive comments. My knives seem to have the destinct ability to be invisible, in plain site. I guess it because the profile is not standard to most peoples percepions of knives.

I like to carry a combination of fixed and folders on a daily basis.

This usually includes a discreet neck knife, my favorites being those made by Perrin, Simonich and Ray Kirk (Raker).

The same knives also function supremely well for pocket carry (or IWB for that matter).

However, I give Sean Perkins kudos for making wonderful pocket fixed blades that are both effective yet non threatening in most any environment. And the A2 stock he uses is as strong and functional as it is attractive.

Unfortunately, most of these makers don't come by enough to beat their own breasts like some others of late. Then again, I don't feel they need to, as the work speaks for itself imho.

I don't think I'll ever carry a fixed blade daily. I just don't see the need for it. Unless you are going to do a lot of chopping, a folder will work fine.

In the City, usually a folder, although I try to have a fixed blade within easy reach, if possible; in the country, usually a fixed blade, with a folder backup.

In a world without sheeple I would carry a smallish fixed blade. Something along the lines of my Simonich Cetan, Livesay's US Marshall, or Busse 3 or 5 inch.

I carry a Rekat Pocket Hobbit because of it's 'over-build' characteristic that spills over to the fixed blade feel. The rolling lock IS very strong and it gives confidence to chores that some folders would back off. Another reason is because i'm staying in the city and carrying a fixed blade beyond 6" would not be enough to justify the cause when faced with the authorities. But i'm going to give the Greco line a try, the spear point concealment knife which has a 3" blade is 3/16" thick! Now THAT is something you don't see on a small blade!

A well made 3-4 inch hunting knife with bone or wooden scales is a lot less scarry than a 3-4 inch "tactical" looking folder. At least that is what I have observed.

Maybe so, but a folder isn't as obvious to carry therfor making it less scarry. Out of site, out of mind! What you don't know can't hurt you

You could explain a Pocket Hobbit, but would have trouble with a fixed blade?

Sorry, but 'round here, the fixed might draw some attention, maybe have a LEO confiscate or ask me to put it away, while a Pocket Hobbit would get me quickly taken in on an "Unlawful Use" charge, owing to it's obvious weapon-based intent. A Hobbit Warrior would go over easier, being, ostensibly, worn in the open in a sheath.

My ideal carry would be two fixed, a camp knife and a utility fixed, along with a backup folder.

Currently I carry an M2 Nimravus and a small Greco. I plan to add a Carnivore to that as I just got one and am trying it out.
Eventually I want to get a small Talonite blade and perhaps a neck knife but we shall see.
Forgot to mention the Buck 110 that rides in my backpack....

stjames,
My favorite carry knife (at this time

) is my LiteWave riding in a IWB sheath. The knife was designed primarily as a "full size" neck knife. Several customers asked for an additional loop on their sheaths for the IWB carry. WOW it works great!! The skeletonized version is thin and I forget it's there and I'm not skinny!!
In a few weeks my D2 model will be replaced with a Talonite version! This will be MY first Talonite knife and I'm looking forward to owning one even if I have to make it

I prefer a folder just because it is concealed, so you can go anywhere with it without drawing attention, unless of course you pull it out.
