Howdy, all, esp. ruel, Pen, Beo, Raghorn, Sarge & Sweet:

I've not had time yet to do the actual etching, jsut some rune layout work and such. I'll get to the etching this week and weekend, and they'll be shipping out after that.

Howver, What I really wanted to get into here is a discussion of some sheath fixes to stabilize the design and make it a good and safe housing for the seax.

This pic shows the seax in the sheath. Note how far the seax sits out of the sheath, even crammed all the way in. The basic issue here is that the throat of the sheath really needs to be extended about 2-3 inces further out, and the loop closest to the throat needs to shift that way as well. THe balance point of the seax sheathed should be evenld dist'd between the loops (currently, 85% of the sheathed blade weight rides on the loop closest to the throat.

Were it easy to splice leaather, I'd just cut the scabbard inn half crosswise, then add 2-3inches of leather to the middle, sew it up, and that'd be it.

Since that is well nigh impossible, another fix is to add the 2-3 inches of leather to the throat of the sheath, extending the sheath to about the thinnest part of the handle. The belt loop will also need 2b moved.

I'm sure we can come up with some more solutions. What ideas do you have for modifying the sheath, short of full replacement?

The last sheath I tried to make was an absolute disaster. I could probably do a passable job using duct tape and cardboard like Bruise did for the JKM-1.

Extending the existing sheath sounds like a solution if you have the tools and know-how. Seems to me you'd have to invert the loops, spread them apart a bit further and leave a split near the end to accomodate the wide portion of the blade.

I'm a huge fan of Terry's work. I suspect I'll wait until I have some funds saved and pass the knife his way. He'll work his magic and come up with a great sheath.

and they'll be shipping out after that.

Keith, please don't ship mine just yet. Stick 'em in the closet or something, and I'll be home one of these days. Thanks.

Maybe this is too dumb to consider, but...since the blade looks like it wants to cut through the stitching already...would it be possible to take copper, or brass, and use it as a "cupped" edging for the bottom of the sheath AND extend it out 2 inches or so to grasp the handle? One piece...slip it on, rivet it down, attach the snap on the extended piece, and voila ! (maybe).

What I'm picturing is... er... sort of like the newer crutches with the forearm support at the top and the staff going down to the hand-hold, except lying on its side. (ok, I give, hope you understand.)

didn't mean to intrude. justathought
