I don't use this method any more because I make integral guards now.
In a machine shop we had a saying that an O.D. is easier to work than an I.D.. I would mill the slot in the guard first and then file or mill the tang to fit. All of my check fiting was done with calipers.Once the guard was made, it was a matter of hitting the numbers on the od. It just made things easier and I could do a better job of controling the shape and size of the tang, than the inside of a 1/4 slot with a needle file.
