Fixing Guard?

I don't use this method any more because I make integral guards now.
In a machine shop we had a saying that an O.D. is easier to work than an I.D.. I would mill the slot in the guard first and then file or mill the tang to fit. All of my check fiting was done with calipers.Once the guard was made, it was a matter of hitting the numbers on the od. It just made things easier and I could do a better job of controling the shape and size of the tang, than the inside of a 1/4 slot with a needle file.

How do you flat grind the blade and the racasso and yet not grind the tang taper in the wrong direction?

DaQo'tah, have you tried one of those long magnets the knifemaker supply places sell? I use one to flat grind most stuff, it helps keep all planes flat and reduces the burning sensation too. :D

how do you use it?

Right now I just hang onto the blade by the tang and push with the other hand near the blade tip end.
