Fixing up an old Axe

Oh, sorry - Wasn't aware of that! Well best of luck finding a handle sir :(

As for the sharpening, if you want to do it the old fashioned way with a file and stone, I really like this video. Skip to 20:36 to get the the part about sharpening:

Thank you. The video was the best I have seen so far on this subject. I did notice the cover for the double bit axe. I had not seen one that had the split down the center.

Just finished the sanding now its soaking in some vinegar once thats done I will post some pics. Now just need to find a good handle and give it a good sharpening and it should be ready

I have used different gun blue solutions on one axe head and then some mustard which has vinegar in it . I like the mottled patterns. I use a Q tip and put streaks etc on the head after it had been polished up and cleaned with acetone. Gives it some interesting character. Have fun. You can always polish it back out.

I'm incredibly jealous! I hope Ross doesn't find his way in here as he's apparently been trying to get his hands on one for quite some time.

So just thought I'd toss in that the head you're working on is most likely a vintage wetterlings. Taken from a post by Steve Tall in this thread.

That video is awesome. That is what I do with my axes, but of course he is using more old school methods. Now I feel almost worthless. I now have to go and get a hand crank drill, axe stones, four in hand, etc. Only thing I do different is that I do stain my handles. It makes them look better to me. Then hit them with the oil for protection. Awesome video. Going to go look up the second part right now.

Thanks!
