Maybe @777 Edge could design some safety covers of some sort to go over the sharp edge, for various sharpeners when not actively in use.
Interesting idea but I think it’s much better to simply make a rule for yourself to NEVER leave an unattended blade clamped anywhere.

If you just need to run to the house/car for an extra tool, take the time to unclamp the blade and lay it down.

A clamped blade is exponentially more dangerous than one sitting on a table and I wouldn’t be surprised if people had been killed by them.

WOW! That is a really nice sharpening set-up. You are way more serious than I am about sharpening knives; I. Get by with an old single angle Spyderco Sharpmaker or a few of their ceramic benchstones. You have a very impressive set-up

Gary, sorry to learn of your misfortune. Hope it heals quickly and without any long term effects. A long time ago an “old timer” taught me to lay a folded shop towel over a clamped edged tool if you had to walk away from it. That’s saved me more than once from the bite of a sharp tool. But, we all know if you play with sharp things, you will get cut.;)

Sorry to hear that! I've come really close to getting cut before too with my KME. I try to always turn the knife away from me, if I have to get up and do something.

I’m usually very cognizant of where things are and this situation I was just starting to get the blade tightened down and was reaching for the Allen wrench when it happened

When I use my table saw I always lower the blade down when I am finished, just as a precaution

Yesterday was a week since the incident, so it seemed like a good time to go and get my stitches removed. There is a thick area around my pinky cut, hopefully that will calm down after some time, otherwise, I can sort of type, but gripping with the right hand pinky is not something that I can do right now. The cut area continues around my pinky, as there were 5 stitches on that finger and one on my ring, the middle finger had a light cut but the doc didn't deem it necessary to put a stitch on that one.

Simpler rule: never leave an exposed edge.

Any unattended knife must always be in a sheath, or a dedicated knife holder base, or a closed drawer, or a container with a lid, or in a knife roll, or hung on display such as in a display case, display rack, or on a magnet strip away from anywhere that you could possibly touch it by accident.

In other words: keep your knives orderly.

Always good advice but in this scenario it would not have been possible to both setup and sharpen with it covered
It is just a ‘Dicey’ situation
Glad it wasn’t any worse

Yes, clamps clearly pose an extra level of risk because the knife cannot move, so it won't be pushed away if and when you accidentally touch it. This makes any accidents potentially much worse than otherwise would have been if the knife was able to move freely and let itself be pushed aside.

But the risk is still minimal as long as you are mindful of the knife. The moment you step away, or shift your focus to something different, then the risk goes up.

Clamps are no joke. Thanks for sharing this and I'm glad you're on the mend.

But, then, what’s going to keep my drink company??
If you're going to drink alcohol, then please at least put the knife in its kydex sheath. I would also suggest that you should maybe put the gun away too. I can see that there's a safety guard, but still. The images you just posted could be considered evidence if anything were to happen... You're making me sound like I'm your mom or a lawyer or something. Please just be safe. I don't want anybody to get hurt.

I’ll take my chances but your concern is noted and appreciated. :)

I certainly don’t play with guns while I’m drinking or otherwise, but knives are a different animal entirely, and love to play. ;)

Yikes!
Sorry to hear and hope you heal quickly!
I’m always a little scared when I clamp a blade anywhere - good reminder to be extra careful.

I have done crap like that with stuff clamped in the bench vice... but luckily for me it was not a sharpened blade. It was a piece of flat strap I just cut with a zip cut wheel in the angle grinder... I now have two parallel scars in my right forearm to remind me NOT to do it again (been clumsy I mean). Same goes for allthread, rebar, angle iron... Basically anything not super blunt you could bump into. If it is solidly clamped in a bench/vice/whatever... it is giong to hurt. And if it s metal and has burrs... it is going to slice you open!

I'm surprised I haven't seen threads here of a certain classification of knives.... "Fondling Knives" or "Coffee table Knives"
*Knives that Don't get used directly, but Just get fondled while sitting down relaxing......
I've thought about this alot.

Do I dull a perfectly good knife on purpose? Do I market a dull, but Pretty knife JUST for that? :D

Speaking as someone who has fallen asleep with a knife in hand, probably more than once.... haha :/

This interview with Bob Dozier, a real no nonsense kind of guy, it made me nervous watching him with his open folder held under his arm that he must have come close to being cut!
