Hello my friends! I have just begun my knifemaking hobby (as I type my dad is figuring out how to get the best scans of my first 2 knives so I can post them) and I am running into a little difficulty. I am making some small fixed blades (7.5" OAL) so that I can learn how to grind without getting carried away (I'll save the bowies for a while yet!) I was grinding yesterday and could get really flad grinds, until I had to do the tips. I don't know how to describe what my grine lines look like now, except to say that I have grind lines (plural!) instead of a nice full flat grind! Do I need to sort of rock the blade as I head towards the tip to grind it proplerly, like when sharpening? Am I making any sense??? I'll be getting Allen Blade's flat grinding video sometime this summer, but I would like help now!
Thanks for your help!

I pull the tang away from the disk when I get close to the point. You need to use very light pressure when grinding anywhere near the point. Bottom line is, lots of practice.

Crayola,
Since I'm more of a hollow grinder I'll stay clear of this one! BUT......
I will bet that If you Email some of the well known knifemakers that flat grind and ask them to set up a time for you to call them on the phone.......
I've found that no matter what the subject, speeking to or visiting a pro knifemaker can cut MUCHO time from ones learing curve!!

First thing i would suggest is get the video.
Best 10$ I'Ve ever spent.
I used to rock up and down a little bit and come up with a pretty good grind.
In the video Allen pulls the tang away from the belt. Just pull it a little straight outthis also tapers the point.

Crayola, Scribe lines on the edge of the steel so you know how far to grind to. Grind with the edge up. As you pull the knife across the belt watch the distance between the scribed line and the belt. When you are getting closer to the tip you will have to pull the tang away from the belt to keep the distance between the scribe lines and the belt even.
If you increase the length of the work rest to about 18 inches and clamp a piece of angle iron to the blade you can get some real smoothe grind lines with a little practice.

Thanks for all of the tips! I'll try them out in 10 days (all of my papers and marking will be done by then!!!) I'm going to get Allen Blade's video and I'll be talking about the problem with Les Allen, a knife maker near me who has been showing me the ropes. I'm covering all my bases on this one and asking all of the experts!!

P.S. Pics of my first two knives are coming soon...
