:eek::D:thumbup::D:eek:

Does anyone know how or why the steel looks like it has the same grain structure as "Fiddleback" or "Flame" type figure as seen in some Maple woods?

Because it is damascus layered steel that has been patterned and etched to show the ladder pattern of the steel.

Also the 3 dimensional shimmering effect can be had above and beyond the layer patterning by pushing the layer count fine enough and keeping things structured so that the light reflects differentially. There is a French term that has come into vogue to describe it that I refuse to use because it sounds way too pretentious, so I prefer "3d shimmering effect":D. I recently was pleasantly surprised to see it on a twist pattern dagger I made for the Blade Show, each diagonal band and starbursts looked as if I have carved them in even though it was a perfectly flat surface. I got lucky, however Jake Powning is probably good enough to have put those nice shimmers in exactly where he wanted them.

I like the work Jake has been doing lately alot and he is going to the one of the demonstrators at Ashokan this year.

I saw it was a collaboration but didn't know who did what. Well if you like the fittings that is what Jake will cover in his demo on lost wax casting.

Uli is an outstanding Bladesmith from Germany. He simply kicked my a** in the CK&G knifemakers build-off this spring. You can find him at the CK&G forum almost daily. Very cool guy who is more than happy to help whomever asks.

And that is some nice stuff you posted there J.S., quite typical of the stunning work that Uli does in everything that he makes. Very unique style and a Master of the trade....... imho ;)

Here is Uli's site http://www.messerunicum.de/

I was surprised to see how young Jake looks he can't be but late 20's early to mid 30's:eek: His and Uli's work completely astounds me. I am awed at how intricate their work is. Thanks Kevin for the for the lesson but approximatly how high would the layer count have to go 400 - 500 layers ya think?,:confused: Stacy, is that pronounced like chateu and boyancy put together? sounds like a sneeze when I say it...:foot::D
