Dredging this one up to conclude the saga of my flamesnknives cocobolo Kopa.
01/15 - I do a BIN on this auction for one of the new Spyderco cocobolo Kopas.

Note that it does not mention anything about this being a "Pre-Order" anywhere in the listing. I will freely admit I was fairly certain they did not yet have them in stock. That because Carlos, who has an uncanny knack for being first in line when new Spydies hit the market, had not posted anything yet about receiving his numbered one, I kind of guessed that they were not in stock yet. While I have no objection to pre-order auctions, I do think they should be clearly labeled as such.
01/26 - Carlos posts his for sale on the Exchange, naturally since I already have two on order, it's still available when I read the listing. Ah well, start doing some mental calculations of the average delay between Carlos getting his and them starting to appear "in the wild". Figure they should "land" by the first of February.
01/29/2005 - Two weeks have passed, no sign of knife, but was not really expecting that. But there has been no word at all from the vendor either. Send a email inquiring about my Kopa's status. Get a reply within a couple hours, that says they are not in yet, but are expected shortly, that mine will ship when they arrive, and that I will be notified at that time, and get tracking info for it. Ok, would have been nice if they let me know this sooner, but it does put my mind at ease. As I said, pretty well figured they'd rolled the dice on this one and bet these being shipped to them sooner. base. whenon Sal's original delivery date
01/31/2005 - See this auction listed - note the "IN STOCK" message in the title.

That, coupled with my "Carlos factor" calculations, and an email from Mary Beth at NGK saying "They're in!" makes me hope Steve got his shipment too.
02/03/2005 - My "other" coco Kopa arrives from NGK
02/07/2005 - The auction I noted above ends and this one, also carrying the "IN STOCK" message in the title begins.

Still no sign of my Kopa, still no tracking number or word that it has been shipped. Send another email. Get a prompt reply stating that they have finally arrived, look great, and that mine will go out tomorrow. Hmmmmm. Did that message in the 1/31 listing title mean they were only "IN STOCK" in Golden? at the distributors? somewhere in the known universe? Or was Steve just fibbin'?
02/11/2005 - Early Friday evening, mail and UPS have been and gone. No sign of the Kopa, and still no tracking info, or even a word saying it is actually on its way to me. Confidence level has sunk to a record low, starting to think that the fact the new auctions are being listed ten bucks higher than the one I BINed might just mean I'll never see this knife. So I send a rather terse email saying show me some proof its on its way to me or I'll be putting in a claim.
02/12/2005 - Get a reply back around noon to my email of the evening before saying the Kopa was shipped on the 8th and should reach me Monday or Tuesday. No tracking number, and, considering the history to date, that makes me just about ready to start typing up that claim. That will be a first for me, so I visit the PayPal site, and, probably through a combination of my mood and their not putting HOW TO FILE A CLAIM in 6" high flashing red letters, it takes me darn near a half hour to find out that, instead of the thirty day limit I thought I was dealing with, I have 45 days to file one. Ok, at least I know I don't have to rush to get it in by tomorrow. Go out to the mailbox a while later and, lo and behold, the Kopa is there. Good thing had this one pegged from the git-go as a "user" since while the knife is undamaged, the box looks like something the cat dragged in, as the $5.95 I paid for shipping and handling bought me a thiry cent padded manilla envelope shipped via first class mail for $1.06. If I had intended this one for the vault, instead of planning to butcher it, I'd be SOL.
So, that's it. As of right now I would not consider bidding on another of Steve's auctions for any reason. Well maybe I'd "roll the dice" if he had a "NIP" CF Walker on a $100 BIN. For me his prices, excellent thought they are, and his quick, polite responses to emails just don't make up for the less than fully truthful listings and the lack of sponateous communication regarding order status. Am I being unreasonable to dismiss any thought of ever dealing with him again?
