I agree with Normark. If you find a problem getting a thoroughly PJ or Wax soaked cotton ball to light, trying pulling it apart so there are fibres exposed. This also works with a lot of commercial starter material
My vote is for fire straws. Messy to make, but clean and bulletproof after. These I learned about right here in Blade Forums, so to whoever posted about them (might have been Longbow), thank you.
I just saw an old post by Thomas Linton. He mentioned catching filed/sawed mag shavings on a piece of duct tape. Very cool idea Thomas as I have a strip of duct holding my firetarting goodies onto my big knife sheath, overlayed with black electrical. Now I even have a practical use for that little strip of duct underneath that will help solve the "blowing away" mag shavings issue. Very cool ! This place is great.
I took my family camping last weekend. I had planed on teaching them how to use FCBs and char cloth. I had prepared about 12 to 15 FCBs for the weekend. The kids got so into lighting them with the ferro rod that when I took a beer run into town I bought a bag of cotton balls and a jar of PJ for them to make more. Towards the end of the weekend my daughter was getting four fires out of a single FCB. The char cloth worked out great too.
