Just discovered flap wheels. What kind do y'all use? Where do you get em? Will a common bench grinder run the 6" ones?

I never thought that flap wheels would work on knives very well. How are you going to use them??

I'm using the scotchbrite kind after filing the rough shape into the handle to knock it down to 80 grit. Eventually I'll get another and knock it down to 180 grit. Then just finish sanding.

Plusses. Fast. Its soft and doesn't scunt into the material at the edges of the wheel. Fits into contours, which is very important for my work.

I used my first one chucked into my lathe, it was so good that I went out and found a variable speed bench grinder to load the bigger ones up onto.

Its the second Ohhh moment for me recently. You guys use Cratex wheels? Do so. (Harry Matthews tought me about them.)

I am going to go get me some of these, Andy. Plus one on the Cratex tubes:thumbup: Sure does make that steel purdy:D

I bought a little Cratex dremmel attachment. Really useful for cleaning up plunge issues, and for deburring the guard area.

Just a tip...you can run them in your press too.....Just be careful....you will want to jewel everything in sight.....LOL

I never thought about using them in the plunge areas. I am sure its much better than accidentally hitting the side of the contact wheel while cleaning up:eek:

Cant wait to try the flap wheels. If there anything better than the scotchbrite belts...I will be in heaven!!!!!!

On a recent re-grind of a Russel Green River knife, I used an 80g flap wheel to work on the point. It allowed a lot more care and precision than my belt grinder!

I'll definitely be buying more to work on handles and such. In my opinion, every bit as useful as a small wheel attachment.
