Flash Rust Removal without removing electro-etched maker's mark

I wondered if anyone here had a rust removal method that did not affect electro-etched maker's marks. Luckily, I don't have to worry about serious rust in this case, but it would be nice to neutralize some flash rust (in shapes that look suspiciously like water droplets...)

Is evaporust a no-go in this case? I have a feeling it would be rough on electro-etched spots.

I guess there is always oil & fine scotch brite.

0000 steel wool used dry does do a good job, and doesn't hurt the black much at all, but just seems like a fine grit sandpaper backed with wood strip to prevent digging into the etch mark helps keep the black of etch from getting washed out any at all.
