Flashlight suggestion?

Well, I need a flashlight (and some education, too). What I know by now is:
Incandescent=brighter, LED=longer lifespan, Surefire=most hyped and supa cool

In fact, the only real application for a flashlight it's to track my dog in the bushes. Walking the dog when dark is an asspain.
I have a big Philips for that purpose, but looking for something pocket-friendly, around $50-70.

A Fenix L2T would suit your needs well. Feed it with NiMH rechargables.

The L2T was the exact light I was going to recommend. I just purchased one myself and it is amazing.

www.candlepowerforums.com if you want to get sucked in and end up spending as much on lights as we do on knives. :)

As long as you are fine with a Chinese import, the L2T is a great light. I own Surefires, Streamlights and Inovas and Fenix is the bang for the buck king.

Keep in mind Lenny , do you want something that runs on "exotic" batteries , or something that runs on readily available batteries.
I love my Surefires but personally I would choose something that ran on AA, AAA before I bought another Surefire or any other light than ran on "exotics".
Also , I'm not famaliar with stores in Russia , maybe you folks have a better battery selection than I do.

That's why my reccomendation is the Fenix L2T. Runs on AA batteries. Performance kinda sucks with regular alkalines, but works great on NiMHs. If you're using it every day or so for dog walks, rechargables are the way to go anyway.

I just got a FireFly III from Doug Speck. Amazingly bright and small. I also like the variable brightness levels to maximize utility.

I've checked, Lithium 123's are quite common (not cheap, though, $4,5 each)

Thanks for advise, guys.
Too bad, Newgraham doesn't sell Fenixes. What are those Pentagon lights they offer? Couldn't find any reviews.

I've got a few re-chargables here and there , how do they stack up against a regular battery in longevity ? I mean I can buy a pretty big pack of AA/AAA at Home Depot for around 10$.
I want one of those Fenix's :)

Good luck Lenny on your light purchase.

I've got several really good handheld flashlights but for walking my Weimaraner at night in my rural setting nothing beats a headlamp.

My recommendation to you would be to look at offerings from Princeton-Tec and Petzl. Great lights and hands free operation. (I do often carry a SureFire or Fenix in the pocket of my pants or around my neck as a backup in case of a light failure.)

A Weimaraner! With blu eyes! nice dog…
Mine is black old English Cocker-Spaniel.

Thanks! Actually he has amber eyes. They mostly have blue eyes when pups. Mine's about 2 1/2 now.

Think about the headlamp option unless you just are really determined on a handheld light.

Just remember... If you run into your hot neighbor while dog walking and you have a big light strapped on your head... you will look like a total dork!

CR123's can be had for under $1 online. Join CPF and get additional discounts on lights and batteries.

Pentagon lights are very good, although not too popular.

A couple of ways to look at that...

First, she'll be blinded by the light as you stare at her...

Second, a real man wouldn't worry about something so trivial... :D

In the flashlight, or over time? Over time, rechargables will pay for themselves if you use the item frequently. Just remember to recharge them once the light starts to dim, because NiMHs don't like to be overdischarged.

As for in the flashlight, well, look at the runtime plots in this review. Alkalines might be fine in things like TV remotes or other low-drain devices, but they're absolutely horrible in high drain devices like flashlights or digital cameras. They simply can't handle the current draw.

You can pick up a 4 pack of 2500mAh cells at Best Buy or Wal*Mart for like $15. Last you a long time.

I run mine on Duracell AA's (Shown in a few tests to be about the best "common" AA's that are available). I got a box on ebay and with shipping cost about 40 cents a piece.

I have another light that runs on CR123's (It's an Incan bulb), and a reason for buying the L2T was to keep batteries cheap and runtime long, which the L2T does a great job at.

www.lighthound.com has $10 incan "Police" flashlights that run on CR123's. For the price, they are an excellent beater light.

i would HIGHLY recommend the Pelican M6 2330. my wife bought one for me and use it here in the desert every day. it is much easier on batteries than a lot of the surefires, but of course that depends on how hot of a lamp it has. this model has a 1 watt lamp and is incredibly bright. of course, it is also uses a luxeon LED lamp. it is compact and has a carry holster that also holds a set of spare batteries. the higher the lumen value, typically the shorter the battery life. it has a push button on/off switch in the tail cap and will not turn on accidentally while in the holster. i've tried. i rate this as one of my top tools that i won't ever be without. you can get one off ebay for around $65 or so. hope this helps! :D

Hmm , I'm going to have to track down my nimh's and try this out.
Since I moved over a year ago , a lot of stuff is still in boxes... :)
