Flashlights: What Am I Missing?

I have a good charger an rechargeable AAs and AAAs.

I also had a Surefire G2 in desert tan, but gave it away. I sucked batteries dry quicker than any other light I've seen (normal CR123 cells).

Sorry, I meant G2L. The LED version has a greatly improved runtime over the standard incandescent.

Please let me know if there's some great light that I'm missing.

If it has not already be mentioned, a good Fenix or similar head lamp is very handy as it frees up both hands. I recently changed Mrs. Powernoodle's car battery in the dark and did not have a head lamp, and did the whole thing with a Quark light between my teeth. Not good. :)

Their is a reason my fenix lights see seldom use and why my surefires are always in my pocket.

I own a bazillion lights, and am exactly the opposite. I always have a Fenix or Quark on me, and my Surefires get no love. Mostly because the Fenix or Quark lights are much more agreeable to feeding on rechargeables. And while I am generalizing, they seem to be smaller and brighter, which are two good EDC attributes. But there is no question that Surefire makes good stuff too.

Surefire X10.

I was about to say CountyComm.com but I see you already found it. Check out their tactical flashlight too for around $30. They have some great stuff on there but you have to find it.

Those Maratac AAA lights are really nice for the money.

+1 on the Surefire G2 LED. Super bright and great runtime, not a bad price too.

I have never owned a 'good' flashlight, so i decided to get one...I bought a Fenix LD20 (2xAA) and its a hell of a thing...

What you need is an ultra-mega-thrower. Something like the DEFT FTP is a good choice. It's a semi-custom light that's sold directly by the guy making them on candlepowerforums.

It takes 4xAA, and can out-throw some HID lights, with an LED and aspheric lens. I can fit it into a large jacket pocket, and in true dark, with well adjusted night vision, it can visibly illuminate objects close to half an mile away. It's insane.

these are NOT my pictures but they give you an idea what the DEFT is capable of...

Ilike the Olight I 10 Infinitum ($25). It runs on 1 123 Lithium battery and is infinitely variable from about 4 lumens to 180 lumens. The on button has two covers, a black one and one that glows in the dark. It has over twice the output of lights that run on a single AA or AAA battery. This stands to reason because voltage of the 123 battery is double that of the AA or AAA. It fits nicely on the Fenix head harness which is available as a seperate item ($20).

Please email me where you found one for $25.

Holy crap that's impressive! Do you have a thread link to the CPF modder making these? What's the price range of these and what's run time like on 4 AAs?

You'll find that in a room that is completely dark you don't need that much light for the area to seem bright.

I would recommend the Quarks (I personally EDC a 1x123a tactical). The moon mode is super low and would be great for those times in the theaters. Meanwhile on high it'll illuminate things 60 yards away quite well. It all depends on how much light you want at 200 feet. It's like 20 dollars more than the MiNis though.

I got to play around with my friend's Quark MiNi 123 this weekend and it was impressive as well. I would get one myself if it had a moon mode as well. You'll find that the low on it will probably still be too bright in a theater. I guess you could cover the light with your hand and only let out some light between your fingers.

X2 on the Quark line...I have the tactical Quark 123 and 123^2. Great lights and beat the hell out of all the Surefires I have owned.

The price is two hundred bucks, and they are built in small batches - you have to get your name on the email notification list, then be fast to snag one when a batch is released. I got in on the first batch of them, and am glad I did!

I haven't tested runtime myself, but it is claimed at around an hour and a half on nimh, and another extra hour on non-rechargeable lithiums. I believe rechargeable lithiums are not recommended due to too-high current.

Okay, I just recently got it, but I can highly recommend it! Romisen RC G2 II Q5. It runs on one AA battery, and man, that thing is bright. Of course the run time is lower, but I think it's still a great light.

I suppose $19 is in your price range, huh? :D

just received mine today (not the Q5 though) from DealExtreme. But it is not mine to have is for my father.

Quark aa2!
+1. I have a Quark 2AA Neutral Tactical used for a work light (even though its is now cycled from WDC-work daily carry- rotation). Its a great light but now replaced by my Ra Clicky:cool:

Hmm, that's too bad. I have both, and the Q5 is almost twice as bright (with the same run time). Still, the DX version is great, and cheaper.

The Quark AA2 sounds great. I ordered one a while ago but it's backordered. Should be back soon though.
