flask of kerosene, some cotton = BIG fire

I have this little 3 oz stainless steel flask, its MUCH TOO SMALL for booze :D , so i filled it with clear kerosene.

To use it i open the flask, put a cotton ball or dental cotton packing on the opening, tip it let some kerosene flow out into the cotton. Then i close the lid. Take the cotton and place under your kindling, fluff it up and spark it. It will ignite with the tiniest and weakest of sparks, into a massive flame that quickly climbs thru the kindling. It burns quite hot, for about a minute.

Kerosene + cotton < had to blow it out early, Flickr has time limits on video. the cotton burned for around 3 minutes straight.

sure it aint "primitive" or "bushcraft traditional", but i dont give a rats
a:eek::eek: if i'm not following strict bushcraft law for lighting a fire:grumpy: I want fire NOW, we have had 300+ mm rain daily , its been raining for two weeks straight, if you want to "forage" for tinder and spend your time fussing the bushcraft way, go ahead. I want fire now please , and this method works, fast, hot and it rapidly dries out damp or wet kindling.

i can get about 150 fire lightings from one flask. Or i can dump it all if need be to light a signal fire.

something to try. It all packs nicely into a Pelican 1010 case or a leather pouch.

pics next BC hike! :thumbup::cool:

kerosene is good i guess.

i still like using coghlan's firepaste if i'm starting fires in REALLY wet conditions like we're having now.

Ha, only an alcoholic would say 3oz is to small for booze. Personally I'd rather have 3oz. of booze than 150 fires. Or better yet, fill it with flammable alcohol and have the best of both worlds.

I could, but booze evaporates very fast. Kerosene is oily and has a very slow evaporation rate, which in turn = longer burning time...critical in the woods when you need to get a fire going fast.

I guess the 3oz flask was a gift no man in his right mind would buy such a small one;)

I sure hope so, I am actually looking for a cheap flask to put some HEET® in for a small alcohol stove, I use a damp cotton ball to prime my stove. Best part is you can extinguish the cotton ball and use it several times.

Kero also does a reasonable job of wound cleaning obviiously not first choice but Grand dad swore by it.

Nice. The cotton is untreated? IE, no PJ or anything on it? I wonder if it'd be worth it to use kerosene on PJCBs, or if the kerosene would burn through the PJ to quick to make it worthwhile.

untreated. I just dip it in the flask, fluff it up and spark it.

PJ would inhibit the soaking of the kero into the cotton me thinks......

I have one of those little Zippo lighter fuel capsules. Probably holds an ounce or less but it's good for a few emergency fires.
