Flat edges on blade blanks: how flat is necessary?

I've made two blanks from 1084.

I'm using hand files, and I've got the blanks pretty close to square -- meaning flat along the edges, or as close to 90 degrees to the sides as I can.

How flat do the edges need to be before I file down the bevel?

Any suggestions for getting them there? I have files, also a dremel and a drill press.

Thanks!

You can get things pretty square by eyeballing but using a square to make sure would be even better. If the angle isn't noticeable and you're new to making (not selling) I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thanks Jeremy.

I do think I want to get it as square as possible with the tools I have. So, I'll be purchasing a square.

(Anyone want to recommend a brand or style?)

I have no aspirations at starting a business, but might try to sell a knife or two on Ebay, just by way of auction, to see how that goes.

More likely I'll give them as gifts.

Either way, I want to make them as hight quality as possible.

Thanks again!

I typically go for starrett on my precision measuring instruments. Though a cheaper brand is general. Not near as accurate but plenty close for what you're doing.

It does not really matter how square they are when you start filing. during the bevel filing if you find that they are not square enough, just square them then, they will be thinner and easier at that point anyway. Get things the way you want before heat treat because filing after is not much of an option after, however stones still work. In reality it is all a moving target until you are done. Good luck.
