Hey guys, just a quick question. Could any of you explain or provide a resource on how to flat grind/convex blades? My instructor told me hollow grins were the easiest and that I should stick to them, but I'm just not really a big fan of that kind of grind and it seems a flat grind would be easier. He makes blades as a hobby so he doesn't get very big on making them, just showed me the ropes. I will be restarting tomorrow so any information would be great. Thanks!

That is a good video. Basically, you start by marking your center that is around 0.03 thick at the center of your profiled blade. Next, with a low grit belt (50 or 60 grit is a popular choice), you make a 45 degree bevel on either side that goes almost all the way to your center reference lines. The next step is to start working that 45 degree bevel up the blade by making subsequent passes at lower and lower angles. I do this edge up so I can see my edge contacting the belt. Basically, you lay your blade against the belt/platen on the bevel that you just made, and apply more pressure on the spine side of the blade as you make your pass.

Here are some really old pics I took a long time ago when I was grinding everything on a Grizzly 2x72".

Basically, you knock off the corner like so (I typically do this on the platen rather than on the slack belt):

So you end up with something like this:

Then you slowly work the bevel up the blade:

Thanks. I'm really new to this so I probably don't have much if any of the gear I need. I just use some bar stock and some gloves and just grind it on a belt grinder he picked up.
