Flat grinding on a Coote

Anybody doing it? I keep looking at it and going hmmm. Two inch belt and platten, seven inch blade, this is just a large screwup waiting to happen. Maybe I should start flat grinding a two inch blade? Hee hee. (This will be my first attempt at flat grinding by the way; always did hollow)

Here's two I flat ground on my Coote. 14" and 8 1/2"

Good looking blades. I use a Coote and 99.9% of my blades are flat or convex ground. I put a glass patten on the steel one and it helps keep everything flat. The Coote is a good machine for the money. The trick to flat grinding is like hollow grinding, grind at a slight angle so that the edge nearest the ricasso is taking just a little more off than the point so that you don't dig into the rest of the blade.

Cootes are fine, used one to do what ever kind of grinding i needed for over 5 years.
 
Just curious...what are the above pictured long knives used for? Thanks and they are truely beauts.
 
Justin, those are cool knives. Nice work. They make me remember Tom Maringer and his Vorpal knives. :thumbup:
 
These were early prototypes for Atienza Kali, The Atienza way is of the longer blade, these designs are now in 3v, Still grinding on the Coote :D
