Greetings,
The wife's not looking.....so I can buy more tools :)
I am new to this addiction/hobby and I am just collecting the right tools to be successful at knife making.

How many knife makers, who flat grind, use a 6x48 with a 12" wheel grinder verses a 2x72 grinder. Or do you use both…Please explain. I already purchased a 2x72 suremake grinder. My thoughts are to flat grind first before hollow grinding.

I am thinking of purchasing a 6x48 with a 12" wheel grinder from Busy Bee. I have a spare 1hp baldor DC motor and speed controller.

Thanks,

That's all I use for flat grinding. I have made a lot of knives with my 6 x 48. Useful for other things, too.

If you are learning, hollow grinding is easier to learn than flat grinding, IMO.

My impression is most makers use a 2x72. I do, a Coote.

I learned, however, on a disc grinder, just stir the mud around your question a little bit :D

I rough in with a 2x72, then go to the 6x48 to true up, then hand sand from 220 or sometimes 100 grit, to however far I decide to take it.

Dennis,
Are you gonna get out to Kamloops this weekend for the knifeshow?
There is also a get together friday, should be quite a turnout.

my first few knives were made on a 4x36 (like the guy in the loveless/moran book) So glad I have a 2x72 now . I could see the advantages of a 6x48 tho. and would like one in the future.

Kelly,
I wish I could attend the shop this weekend. I have completed my shop before the end of the month and move out of my other property, as the new owners take possession then.

I will be making a camping trip in the area this summer and will arrange to visit and/or have a couple beers!

On large batches of blades ,I rough out the bevels on a 9" disc; go to the 6X48 to clean everything up; and finish on the 2X72. The 6X48 is also useful for getting the flats on a sword blade straight.

I use only my Coote 2X72 for all steel clean up, tang tapering, and bevel grinding and my KMG horizontal edge grinder for blade profile (after band saw rough cut out) and for handle work. I would put an edge grinder way ahead of a 6 inch belt grinder in order of priority, hands down - no doubt. An edge grinder will prove priceless to you.
