Hey gents. I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive 2x72 grinder to set up with a flat platen and square work rest that can be locked solidly so nothing moves. I currently have a bee metal grinder, and I love it however the flat plate is secured by threading in the center on a single point in the middle and will move/rotate off square when pressure is applied, throwing it out of true... this poses a problem for my accuracy and precesion, so i've decided to keep it for my hogging and handle work and get another inexpensive one dedicated to the task... any ideas? i have been using an old 2x42 but i just traded it off to a guy who's getting into making and needed something to learn on.

any help would be much appreciated.

Seeing as you're in Canada you could always check out TDM Grinders from Alberta. Google Sahtu Designs for the website.

I'm curious about this

I have the same and it's really stout in my experience

Which piece is moving, the flat platen, or the rest ?

You can also just use a heavy hex nut on the platen and a combination wrench.
My Canadian Tire wrenches are long - especially in that large size
(Those long wrenches are bit of a PITA in most situations, but I can definitely tighten it down so it will not move)

Yes, I've done the same as the Count, but have also added an additional locking bolt. Yes, I never move it. The squareness was taken on a height of 1/2" to make sure I got what I want. That's a great grinder you have there, Bud.

I agree it is a great grinder. variable speed and the whole nine... I thought I had adjusted everything I could without modifying it and tapping/drilling a few more things on to it. i'll take a second look at it, but I really like the ability to play with the angles when I unlock it too... that's why I was thinking of a dedicated one. still undecided just checking options at this point.

thanks
