Flaw in BK2 blade?

Hi,

I just stripped the paint off of my BK2 today, and I noticed what I thought was a rust spot. I tried to scrub it off with some baking soda, but it didn't come off. After taking a closer look, I'm not sure that it's a rust spot at all. It's a small blotch of squiggly brown lines, like an octopus. What do you think?

Not sure what that is. Strange. Is it on the sharpened part as well? Hard to tell by the photo.

I’d say it’s just a stain. Sometimes corrosion gets under the coating and turns dark like that. I see it at work on sheet steel and it’s sometimes reddish and sometimes jet black. Always looks like mold growing to me :)

The squiggly octopus thing is right on the edge of the blade. Here's a picture of the whole knife. You can sort of see it right in the middle of the edge.

It does sort of look like mold. I looked at it through a jeweler's loop and it seems to be just on the surface. It doesn't show up where metal was taken off of the edge. So, maybe nothing to worry about?

I'd beat on it like it stole something. These knives are made to be users.

By the way, welcome to the forum, glad to have you here. And, those scales look awesome.

Thanks guys! I'm really happy with the knife's new look. The pins will tarnish, but I really like the copper. I'm going to tackle the sheath next. Going to use nice rigid leather and get rid of the floppy mess that it came with.

strop that for a while on scotch bright and see what happens

If you are in my nearaboute i can do a MT or PT-test on that blade for ya.
Just in case... ;)

I have a similar "stain" near the tip of a ZT 630 I have - doesn't seem to affect a thing ... and that's on a stainless steel blade.

Keep in mind that I am no metallurgist - but I try to play one on the internet. ;)

What type of leather are you planning on using?
Make sure it is Vegetable Tanned, and Not Chromium (or otherwise) Tanned. The residual chemicals that are left behind are harsh enough to destroy a carbon steel object within two weeks...

Only use Vegetable Tanned.

For the BK2, I would suggest a suitably heavy leather, maybe 9-10 oz. Hermann Oak. If you dye it, it will stiffen up. I would suggest Sno-Seal and a heat gun for a water protectant.

If you have any other questions, tag me or quote me.

I think doing a bit of polish work on the surface of that "stain" would be appropriate before deciding for sure it's a metal flaw. It may go away....

I had a similar looking flaw on a bk11 i had awhile ago, figured it might be an inclusion in the metal and to use until something happened, which it never did. Ended up selling it and getting an izula (blasphemy, i know). The bottle opener always hurt my hand. Kind of want to give it another try though...
