Now that I know what to look for, I had my eyes peeled today. I saw this mask and asked how much and the old feller says 10 bucks. So I make a disappointed face and turned to walk away and he says ok 5 bucks. SOLD! Its a 3m and has a p100 7090 cartidge. Will this do for working with Cocobolo and micarta?

When I was walking away the guy told me here this goes with it. I have no idea what this other part is or what it is for.. It is a Kasco T8 0303038. I will google it later tonight.

No, that thing is no good at all. Save yourself the trouble and just mail it to me...

Actually, I'd try to see if I needed to replace the filters if it was mine. They look barely used from the picture, though. 3M can tell you which ones you need for your purposes, or maybe Tracey at USknifemakers.

If the "other part" you mentioned is the item in the 2nd picture, it looks like a DC powered blower with two filters to me. If so, it would be worn around your waist, with a tube attaching to the mask to make it a PAPR. I have a PAPR, but mine is powered by a battery pack.

That is the blower pack for a positive pressure air supply. There is a hose that connects to the face unit. The respirator you purchased is not the face unit for the blower. The blower plugs into a batter pack ( looks like this one is for vehicular use...maybe from a Humvee?), and goes to the face mask. It would not be hard to make a fitting from a filter to connect the hose to your new face unit.

Good deal on the mask itself.

I wouldn't want to use filters that had been used by someone else..but that's just me.

The masking tape on the filter is 4/26/01 which means to me either 2001, or 2004.

That p100 7090 cartridge filter is just dust protection.
If it was an activated carbon filter for VOC, it would be inactive by now.
(I agree with the others get some new filters)

What is that ring gear / hose clamp on the exhale valve?
I've used a very similar North, not 3M so I'm not sure if it really belongs there or not, but the ones I did use had a tendency for the plastic fittings to breakoff or crack from overtightening, or impact.

I would have a close look at it, take it apart and wash everything with soapy water,
and look for cracks or leaks.

Being a 3M parts should be easily available.

If you want to power grind micarta, an "acid gass" or VOC Volatile Organic Compund cartridge is recommended- the stuff gives off formaldehyde during grinding.

(the dust cartridges fit overtop to protect against both)

Ok! That was stolen from my shop. I want it back. Just drop it in the mail. I'll gladly refund your $5.00 plus shipping and a $2.00 finders fee. I see no point in involving the police.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D OK! couldn't keep a straight face and keep typing this. Great score....... You did steal it you know.

The powered unit is not for the mask as Stacy pointed out. The 3M system I have simply pumps the air in the back of the helmet and exhausts it below the mask part (along the jaw and chin). There is a little skirt of some tyvek type material to make a closer fit around the chin and jaw area. The basic idea is to have a positive pressure in the headgear so clean air is spilling out all the time even when you inhale. You can get a 110V adapter for that cigarette lighter power supply for a few bucks. I'll bet that you could modify the headgear to leak air out and maintain a positive pressure. This may not be the most safe option, but could work safely if you go about it the right way. Best of luck and good to see you on TB!

I'll give ya 25 bucks for it. That is a 500% return on your investment. Try getting that kind of return on your money in one day in any other kind of investment, especially in this economy. ;)

Thanks guys, Edro theres alot of good info on TB. Fletch Helical I never thought of it that way. Lol...

filters with a green band are for organic vapors and those with the purple like color (magenta actually) are for particulate, (dust). The lower set on the remote supply unit is a combo and does both. I am sure you can get them by the box at any industrial safety supply. Looks like the threaded type, You can also get the magenta filters in a soft pad confiicuration as well as the can type.

Send it to me for cleaning, you dont want to breath in what came out of his nose and mouth while it was sealed up in that thing or rub faces with him from his sweating all over the insides of it:D If that grossed you out I'll take it off your hands and will pay shipping..
