It is my recollection that SR-101 as tempered by the factory, will in the same blade length, width and thickness, bend/flex further without taking a set than INFI as tempered by the factory at the time that SR-101 was introduced.

INFI on the other hand will be more malleable and less likely to break and will keep an edge, far beyond SR-101, in use against Soft materials like wood/clean rope/leather and such, more likely to deform instead of chipping.

With Modified INFI doing much the same as INFI.

Plenty of threads about this when SR-101 was introduced

How can one sr-101 be more flexible yet less resistant to chipping?:confused: I thought those two characteristics would go hand in hand? I admit I know very little about this sort of thing but it interest me very much.

Sr-101 would be more flexible than INFI? Does that mean that it tend less to break? Or, even if INFI is less flexible, it`s stronger than Sr-101.... I don`t understand....

If that is in fact the case it could be because it's differentially tempered, and the edge at full hardness isnt as tough as INFI but the softer spine imparts greater flexibility.

BINGO!. . . I couldn't have put it better myself!. . . :cool::)

You da HOG!. . . :thumbup:

Ok, I understand. Another question: an INFI blade differentially tempered, is it possible? Is it stonger?

No hostility intended. Misinterpretation on my part. I apologize if I gave offense. Peace.

Better for this, better for that?

I am well enough pleased with INFI in big knives that I pretty much stick with it.

For small knives it sort of depends on the end use, with INFI being my compromise metal for when edge retention needs to be combined with over all strength and stiffness.

For just hold and edge and keep going, while not rusting at all, Talonite/Stellite makes for some great small knives, edges three inches and less,

But Talonite/Stellite is soft and deforms and takes a set pretty easily, but is great in salt water, stays working sharp a long time, just not rigid enough to pry with.

Edited to add:

My Basic #3 is a real tank, my new model Game Warden is just sort of an APC.
